So are there any non-mainstream bands / artists out there that you're listening to that we might not have heard of?

I'm into a Danish band called 'The Kissaway Trail' at the minute.  Their use if the English language is interesting to say the least, but I like it.

Youtube or whatever links please.

Define 'mainstream' first.

Most of Hegg's list are like the mainstream posterchilds of their genre (EITS/God Is An Astronaut as post-rock, Braid/Sunny Day for old emo etc.)

If by 'mainstream' you mean pop, then here follows the full list of 30 trillion artists...

It's all relative really. I was listing bands that were unlikely to be heard if the person in question only listened to the radio. However, if you were to really get into the respective genre, yes, these are bands that you will have heard of and probably will have listened to.

Yeah, my point precisely Does he mean 'mainstream' as in, the representation of 'x' genre through the popular and 'surface' bands, or does he mean the commercial mainstream scene- aka 'pop' genre? Either way, a good topic for sharing decent music!

No not pop.  Mainstream doesn't necessarily only mean the cash cows of the music industry, with huge marketing budgets and lots of media exposure, the epitome of consumerism.  Two of my favourite bands Deftones and Thrice don't really have the above but I would still consider them mainstream.

By non-mainstream I mean very little media coverage and airtime, ie you might see them on music channels once in a blue moon.  Small / independent record labels, foreign bands (could be popular in one country but unknown in the next), and even upcoming bands who may eventually fall into the mainstream category later on in life, but are currently an unknown quantity.

Fair enough.

See all the bands I listed then. I can honestly say I have never heard any of them played on the radio and rarely see any sort of video played on TV.

Oh well then I'll just rattle off some hideously under-rated and under-exposed bands that I've listened to in the last 24 hours (Last.fm for the win, exhaustive lists for the lose):

Jeniferever
Immanu El
yourcodenameis:Milo
pg.Lost
This Will Destroy You
Joy Wants Eternity
Gregor Samsa
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Helios / Goldmund
Labradford
Eluvium
Tetsu Inoue
Belong
Max Richter
Frog Pocket
Sylvain Cheveau

I'm far too lazy to actually list any from thought, that's just a swipe from my recent charts .

Sonata Arctica - Power Metal
DragonForce - Power Metal

Althought many people know DragonForce, they only know them for one song "Through The Fire And Flames". But they do have some really good and sometimes better songs then the one in GHIII. Sonata Arctica is the same genre but slower in pace than DF.
