With Blu-ray movie prices a little as a dollar over DVD media, I've been considering discontinuing DVD movie acquisition where hi-def is available, and have been hearing from a few sources that the PS3 is the way to go. While the following two only have two USB ports, they run a bit more quietly, which is important:

...but are otherwise identical.

q1) What do you guys think, the 80GB or wait for the 160GB? I'm inclined to go for the 80GB and upgrade the HDD later.

---

Further additions as they occur to my sleep-logged mind. Add anything else about hi-def A/V if you want.

Honestly I don't know much about Blu-ray players or PS3's, but I'm planning on getting a PS3 eventually. But first a question, do you still have a PS2 or PS1 and play games on those? Because if you'd like a fully-backwards compatible PS3, try and find a 60 GB. But if you're not worried about compatibility, just go with the cheaper 80 GB and upgrade the HDD to a 500 GB later. And I wouldn't even consider a Blu-ray player. A PS3 is about the same price and can play games and music and loads of other stuff too, so it's definitely worth it if you want to build sort of a home media center (throw all your music and movies on it and have it all in one convenient place).

Isn't that in like what...~five years? That's a pretty late start for library building.

edit: Yeah, but I'm not seeing many replacements around the corner, and streaming just isn't the same...even if you could get around the bandwidth caps some ISP's are implementing.

I don't have any PS1/2 games in my library and rigs that are backward-compatible with PS2 are both 90 nm and grossly expensive. I briefly considered it, but figured on just buying a used PS2 if I wanted to do that.

Bed.

Well, PS3 acquired. The 80GB sort. Thanks, Target.

Now I'm investigating the rest of the goods:

YAMAHA HTR-6180BL 7.2-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver - $900
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6882115119

Philips 42" 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV w/Perfect Pixel HD - 42PFL7403D - $1400

Thoughts?

Yes but blank dvd media is much cheaper than blank bd media.. If you catch my drift.

I only buy Blu-Ray now.

Nice little collection. I have three bookshelves full of DVD's, boxes of VHS's and four Blu-Rays (six on the way from Amazon). I couldn't imagine replacing the entire collection, but I buy Blu-Ray exclusively now, unless not available.

About 60.. I did the math and it was about $1,800 over the last 8 months..lol. I have a media pc in my office. I stream that to my home theater system. That's my primary way of watching media.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

If you are not getting a backwards compatible 80gig, get a 40 gig if you can. Upgrading the hard drive is rediculously easy and doesn't void warranty... I've heard that the 80 gig they are selling now offers nothing beyond a bigger HD, I dunno if that means they discontinued the 40 gig... but at least when I bought it for the price difference between the two you could buy a 160gig drive and upgrade yourself.

there is literally just a door on the side of the console. Open it and one screw holds the hard drives tray in. Unscrew and the HD slides out on a special rack. 4 more screws remove the HD from the rack. Its that easy. Intall is the reverse, and the PS comes with built in utilities to back up all the system data on an external drive, as well as reformat the new HD properly. It really couldn't be any easier.

Damn, just saw you already bough, oh well... I already typed all that... I'll just post it anyways.

Buying all the old movies in the Blu-Ray format is a waste of money tbh ... Blu-Ray does not give you a better picture unless the movie is shot in a higher quality ... so to buy a Blu-Ray to replace a movie you have on DVD is almost always a waste of money if it is an older movie ... to buy newer movies is another case however seeing as the content of high quality made movies are compressed to fit on a DVD ...

The prices are already dropping on new releases and will continue to do so as the format sells more ... it's all about pricing if the format is successful or not ...

Not necessarily. The technology exist to upscale the resolution (legitimately, not through a BD player or receivers). You aren't going to get todays production standards but you will certainly notice a difference when it's remastered. I have reservoir dogs on Blu-ray and it looks and sound much better than the DVD version.

Actually, Via Popular Mechanic:
There’s no reason movies shot on 35-mm film can’t look great in HD; their native resolution is actually far higher than Blu-ray’s. (Remember: These movies were shot to fill huge theater screens.) And when films are scanned into digital, they are brought in at between 2000 and 8000 lines of horizontal resolution—far more than Blu-ray’s 1920 pixels across by 1080 pixels down.

Still, celluloid film negatives deteriorate over time, and some digital discs are pulled from degraded film stock. Worse, in the past, studios would make many duplicates right off the original negatives, damaging the master with each copy. When these prints are transferred to digital, no number of pixels can make them look as sharp as they should.

As of now, this is a much larger problem for DVD than for Blu-ray—most current Blu-ray releases are of popular movies from large studios with reputations for taking good care of their archives. Still, not all Blu-ray discs look good—even new releases. “You need someone with a good eye and good judgment to make the transfer,” says Glenn Kenny, senior editor at Premiere.com. An egregious example? The Blu-ray disc of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford has overly enhanced edges that give the picture an unnecessary halo effect.

I have read roughly the same and the exact opposite in several magazines so i'm not 100% sure what is most correct, but as mentioned it's all about price ... and of course the equipment between the DVD/Blu-Ray disc and your eyes naturally
