Several posts have been brought up about what we'd like for new unlocks, and i've posted on these topics about an alternative for new unlocks, and in the interest of not hijacking their threads I decided to post a topic of my own. What do you fellow bf2s forum readers think?

I've put a bit of thought into this, there are 7 unlocks (14 if you're lucky enough to have SF) but waaaaaaaaay more ranks then that.. And that didn't seem fair, at least to me. What happens when you're a Captain or Major nowadays? Nothing to look forward to but badges and ribbons, if you're into all that.

My thoughts were either to spread out the unlocks between ranks (ie only get an unlock after evy 2 or 3 promotion [but then those of us that don't get to play much would never get them]) or adding something 'else' to unlock. But I wasn't so sure about EA adding a gazzilion + 1 new weapons to the game.

What about just adding enhancements to the current weapons? Not talking outrageous 'uber' lasers or '733t guided rocket propelled heat seeking bullets'. No, the train of thought I was on was more like, for example, the option to customize your weapon with a laser sight (for those who don't like iron sights), or a scope that lets you see farther, or adding a longer barrel to decrease bullet drop (obviously for the snipers), or larger magazines for less reloading, or silencers/flash suppressors, or being able to use hollow-point rounds for slightly more damage (with increased bullet drop for lesseend range or fewer mags as a balance, if one is deemed necessary).

Just little things along those lines that really wouldn't eschew the game too much but maybe just give you that little bit of an edge, both in game and psychologically.

Discuss amongst yourselves

Designing weapons upgrades that would have an impact on performance would be a balancing headache, but I could do with a few togglable cosmetic options...not just for unlocks, but for kit appearance.

I love the idea of selectable attachments for your guns. I'd put a silencer and a higher scope on any gun that could take it in a second, but what we gotta remember is these guys are suppost to be GI's (don't get technical with Special Ops).

I've never been in the army, but I don't imagine they hand you an M16 and ask you "want some attachments with that?". You get what you get, unless you bring your own, you are a SEAL, Ranger, or one of those cool special club things. And there's the fact that the approperate kits do more or less get the approperate attachments anyway. Special Ops has a red dot scope, sniper has a scope with a bipod, supports got the bipod. Anti-Tank and Engeneer get close range personal defense weapons, because face it an engeneer isn't to be the main fighting force, and you're not going to put a silencer and a front grip on a shotgun.

The only thing I have to say is........ if EA had given us all an opportunity to input ideas and add features that we wanted, or change things we don't like, BF2 would be a much greater game than it already is.  You've got great ideas, and so do SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE, but the sad fact is that it's already too late to make such large changes to a game, especially because it's based on the internet.

If EA listened to everybody idea's, we'd probably have a MMO Grand Theft Auto. That, or the game would never be released. One person would one one crazy impossible feature, the next guy would want some other one that contradicts thef irst. Face it guys, EA made the game this way, let's not go changing every aspect of the game, just because you think it'd be a good idea, somebody else might not.

I like the idea of extra stuff to stick to your weapons.

I don't think it's too far-fetched for people who have advanced in ranks to customise their gear.  While obviously when you sign up for the military, and you're given your rifle, they don't offer 'laser-sights with that?'.  However, once people have gotten up in the ranks (particularly once they hit comissioned officer level, Lieutenant and higher), non-standard gear isn't that odd, to I think it'd be entirely fitting, and a nice variant.

However, I wouldn't like to see stuff that's "just better".  I'd like stuff that are options, not improvements.  For example, a Hollow-point bullet option might do extra damage, but only to the guys who don't wear armour.  Against people with body-armour on, they'd actually do *less*.  Adding a silencer to a weapon makes it quiet, but you also lose performance, a drop in range and power.

And yeah, it's all a bit late to add stuff like that.  But it kind of depends on what approach EA are taking to the long-term life of the game.  They're obviously happy to produce expansions like SF and EF, so adding stuff like this isn't entirely unfeasible.
