Now i know ive made a fair few topics about what i can do to upgrade my crappy dell (2.6 Ghz dual core, 8600 GT, 4 GB 533 Mhz RAM etc).

but i have finally decided its time to build my own computer... i will be doing it the in christmas holidays (got about 2 months off yay!) and so im looking to decide exactly on what im getting so i can have it at my door for the first day of the holidays.

I will be donating my old computer to my parents, so i wont be recovering anything from it (or giving anybody anything so dont ask lol)

This is my first attempt. note: prices may look high to u guys because here in Australia computer parts are way to expensive.

U may notice that there is no motherboard there. i was not exactly sure on what motherboard to get. so please recommend me a motherboard, and feel free to recommend other parts. (i dont need OS as i can get whatever OS i choose for free). try to use Australian sites. (i have used http://itsdirect.com.au/ i find its pretty good)

Go for a P45 mobo like the P5Q "vanilla" or the P5Q Pro. Also I'd swap out the q6600 for a e8400. It clocks way higher and runs cooler. Quads are only useful for video encoding or folding or something like that. You'll need a decent heatsink too. The Freezer7Pro is pretty cheap and effective. If you're going for high OCs, you might wanna get something a little beefier.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. I recall someone saying that, generally, 8XXX chips peak at the same OC. Then again, that only matters if you're going for a peak OC.

I didn't buy the 8500, not worth it. If you really want it to be that much better, OC it just a tad and it's as good.

Get the 8400, the 8500 isnt worth the extra price. You will probably save a fair bit of money if you get a 512 MB HD 4870 instead of the 1 GB, and 1 GB graphics cards are not necessary unless you have a monitor that is bigger than your room

Drop to an E8400. If anything the E8600 has a slightly better chance of having a lower VID which might give you a slight advantage at 4.6GHz+.

For the cooler: I'd get a Noctua NH-U12P. It's a really great cooler that will get you well into 4GHz, how far is always hard to say due to difference in the CPUs. When OCing 45nm CPUs the rule of thumb is to not go above 1.4V and 60°C for 24/7. As an example, 1.4V gets me 4.4GHz (@ 45°C orthos load on water)

As a side not: 2GB ram only? That's a little on the low side these days. What is the primary use of the PC?

Primary use is gaming, browsing, audio editing etc.

Its 2GB but im ordering 2. notice the quantity is 2. so 4GB of 1066Mhz DDR 2

It's mainly a matter of taste. I really like the P182's interior design. Separated chambers = great clean airflow. Not a huge fan of windows either. Oh how the times change ...

ohk cool. i change it to the P182. i must admit im not a big fan of windows... i reckon it makes u look nerdier haha.

is a Zalman CNPS8700 LED CPU cooler must better? im not 100% what im looking for lol
