Okay, so my backup comp's hard drive broke last week. It's totally wrecked. Today I go and buy a new one: WD 160GB EIDE. I plug it in, rearrange the single jumper in the back so that it should work as primary slave...and start up the comp, with the XP Home installation disc in the drive.
It's all good, Windows setup pops up, it starts copying files and so on...suddenly, I get a blue screen, saying that I've got a BAD_POOL_HEADER. Wtf?

The setup is an old one: Asus A7V333 mobo, 1.3 gb of ram, a AMD Athlon 1700 or something like that...I was 12 when I built the thing, I can't find the docs. It's also got an EVGA GeForce 6200LE.

I'm at my wits' end, been trying to fix it for 16 hours now. Halp!

Sorry, I'm no comp expert. How do I do this?

Refer to your motherboard manual or just remove the little battery loacted on the motherboard for a few seconds.

be sure to observe the correct procedure for handling computer components in the latter tho.

Okay, so I get a different bluescreen now: it says:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

what's that?

That sounds like your PC is unstable. Try memtesting. You can't prime, so try at a lower speed

Dirty? clean it out

I don't know. I've left it running for about an hour, no problems.
and how do I do that impressive-sounding thing?

download memtest from here and burn to a CD. To run at a lower speed, drop your FSB a bit

Okay, so now it only goes to the PCI device listing and just stays there. ????

Max, I think there's a miscommunication. My comp currently has no OS on it. It crashes while I try installing XP.

can you run a live linux CD all right? Just download your fave distro or knoppix. At least we'll know if this is a hardware issue

you're posting from an apparentely working PC. Download memtest from there, burn to a CD, stick CD into broken PC, boot from it, test

Downloading Ubuntu. will update when it's done.

I'm not asking you to do anything from within the broken PC's OS. You change the FSB from BIOS. You download & burn memtest on a working PC

my FSB's at 100, the multiplier is at 11. Usually I have it at 1.4 gHz.

if you're still unable to install @ 800MHz, it would suggest that your CPU is fine. Hows you're HDD doing?

My bad, it was 1100 mHz, not 800. i miscalculated. My HDD is spinning at 7200, sounds happy.

plop in the CD, choose try without installing and play around in the OS a little. We just want to see if your PC runs fine

Okay, so the BIOS is set as Cd drive #1, and then i started the comp; I got to the PCI device listing, and then the comp just stayed there.

Should I set the HDD as primary or secondary master?

I'm gonna stick my neck out here, but I reckons it's your power supply.

It doesn't matter - it's not even getting that far - something hardware has died or is dying.

Okay, so how do I check that it's the PSU? I suppose I have to switch it with that of another comp?

Yuppers. And you need to make sure the one you're swapping in is of high enough rating to power your spec of hardware, and ideally is known to work with said spec of hardware.
