My university offers the opportunity to do a semester at another university. I'd like some thoughts on which to choose. I want to go to either the States or Canada, however my course means that I only have two available to me there, these being the University of North Texas, and York University, Ontario. Thoughts on which one to go to? Has anyone been to either/know anyone who has? Course wise, I'm not really that bothered about how well the university ranks, as I'm doing it for the experience not the work. At the same time, I obviously I don't want to go to a school full of fuckwits.

You'll want York University then.

Consider what you're taking, and look up both universitys' facilities and reputations for it. E-mail students and staff with questions. Finally, do some research into the surrounding infrastructure (you probably want the area around the college to be interesting).

If it's important to you that everyone around you should agree with you politically, you should probably take that into consideration.

Ah really? Thing is I was quite drawn to the idea of going to Texas, as it's really not the type of place I'd ever bother to visit otherwise. So you think going there would be a bit of a waste of time?

What are you studying?

Speaking of Texas I really wanted to apply to UT Austin but apparently it's near impossible to get in if you're out of state, cause everyone in Texas applies there. Because there's a law that if you're in the top 10% of your high school's graduating class, you are guaranteed admission. Not to mention in-state tuition. And it's a very good institution.

York is like 10 minutes from where I live regularly and about 20 from where I am now, at the University of Toronto.  I've been to York a few times and its not amazing.  From what I've heard its really good at its specialties and terrible at everything else, theres very little middle ground.  The campus is alright, its neither modern nor historic like some schools.  Its also kind of in the middle of nowhere, well depending on what campus you're on.  Its at least 30 mins to downtown Toronto if youre on a far campus but some of them are pretty much in Toronto.  The huge club parties here consist of U of T, Ryerson University and York University so there are plenty of university students in the area.  I really dont know anything about University of North Texas... If you have any specific questions about York U you can ask me and I'll try to answer them or I can ask my friends that go there

That's a pretty raw choice, is it worth the expenditure?

Kiss my Texan top 10% ass.

UNT sucks. Getting an opinion for you from a friend who is in a program where your last two years of high school are merged with your first two in college at UNT.

Hmmm. I have a friend at U of Ottawa, and he says that York is supposed to be pretty good, so I'm leaning towards that right now.

One of the largest schools for PAs (Physician's Assistants) in the state.  I have a friend going.  Nothing wrong with it.  I go the Austin Community College, and know more than 20 people who are here at school from other countries.

Speaking of which, it is time for class.

Besides, Texas is nice (when you are not sweating your balls off).
