FarCry 2 killed my DVD drive!

Searched and didn't find a similar problem, so:

I got farcry 2 a few days ago, and after a few struggles with virtual drive tools (daemon, etc), it installed fine. But the next day my computer started refusing to see the disc in the drive. I thought it was just fc2 being stubborn, so I got a no-disc crack and thought nothing more about it.

But today, I put another disc in the drive, and it refused to recognize that or any other disc. After some swapping, I found that other drives will work in this computer, and that particular drive won't work in any computer. So it doesn't seem to be windows/driver issue, but that the drive itself is screwed.

Any ideas?

well for one thing i can pretty much guarantee you that farcry 2 didnt actually mess up your drive. it was just on its way out

Maybe it also has something to do with any settings or changes you made with virtual drive tools? You might've messed up a real drive in the process.

And besides, replacing a DVD drive won't cost much anyway, so if you don't figure it out soon and really need a new one, you'll drop max around $20 or $30. Shouldn't be a big problem. This stuff happens anyway. Also, is it still under warranty? Can get a new one for free if it is.

I thought/think farcry was the reason because the way the drive is acting (bios and windows say the drive is functioning normally, but the drive acts like it's still empty when I insert a disc) is the way the farcry disc was acting before I got rid of daemon tools. So I thought the Securom might have gone evil on me and messed up my drive.
But no, other than the occasional horror story of DRM's killing drives, I can't think of a reason that a game would cause this kind of problem.

Just thought someone here might have a suggestion.

But if not, I've been looking to get a sata interface drive anyway (cable management/drive positioning reasons), so this gives me an excuse
And yes, I know they're not expensive, but I don't have a job right now, so I'm spending as little as possible

If you had a physical copy of the FC2 DVD, why were you messing around with Daemon Tools? Something doesn't add up here.

I'm guessing you pirated FC2, tried but couldn't get it to work by mounting the image to a virtual drive, and then resorted to burning a physical copy of the image and using that to install the game? If so, I guess it's possible that some nasty new copyright protection (like you mentioned Securom) may have detected the fake copy and killed your DVD drive. But I still lean towards what ceslayer23 said.

I don't think that any disc protection killed his drive, .

uninstall the dvd drivers... reinstall... if no go... the drive probably croaked... dvd burners are 25 bucks luckily...

I wasn't. I had it installed for other uses. I bought fc2 at the store, popped it in the drive, and nothing happened. So I thought daemon might be messing w/ the copy protection and uninstalled it. After that, fc2 worked properly.
Until the next day, when my drive died.
But I've been doing some more testing, and my secondary computer is now doing come weird little things on that my main compy was doing, and they seem to be connected to the activity light on the dvd drive. So that + the replies has me now thinking that the drive just happened to die right after I got fc2.
Ahh well.

Maybe someone can help me here - it sounds like a similar problem.

I was on Total War Medieval 2 Kingdoms the other day when my little son toddled over and turned the machine off. When I went back to pick up where I had been switched off I was presented with a screen during startup which may have been BIOS (or may not), but I didn't pay it too much attention and quit it, and carried on without saving changes (I thought).

I couldn't open Kingdoms and received an error message from Securom telling me that no disc was inserted. However the disc was only 3 days old and hadn't left the machine. The problem is therefore not due to the disc and neither is it specific to Kingdoms, as no other DVDs will now play.

Device manager tells me that the drive is working fine. I have tried doing a system restore and also uninstalling the drive and letting windows find it again on restart. It does, but still won't read any DVDs.

I have emailed a launch analysis to securom and they sent me a link to pick up a new copy of kingdoms.exe. No joy, same result.

I have got back to them, but so far no response.

Any suggestions?

By the way, what is this daemon tools of which you speak? And can it help me?

dunno about magiciso, but i have daemon tools also installed and FC2 works fine as well

My torrented copy works just fine, with Daemon Tools, Magic ISO and Power ISO installed.
