Motherboard, video card, sound card and processor.

Goals:
- Run Windows 7/Vista smoothly, but the computer will start with XP and move to 7 in the future
- Run BF3 smoothly
- Last a few years with the only necessary upgrade having to be RAM, perhaps

I like EVGA's lifetime guarantee on things, but it's not necessary. Don't worry about where to buy them from, I can get them here in Europe or in the USA if anything ends up being region specific (not that I think that's possible ... but ...).

A good monitor would also be nice. Something widescreen.

GO!

I think building a machine for win7 is a bit too early to use current hardware for an incoming windows imo. Maybe the specs are known and similar to Vista's but new DX version just came out and I wouldn't be surprised if a new one is released prior to win7's release. Even if BF3 specs are out you can never be sure how good will your hardware perform until you test it and that won't happen so soon. Just my thoughts.

We can't construct a computer from that. Maybe Apple can.

Budget and place of order, please. And what you're upgrading from.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

If you want it to last years, I would recommend getting a quad core cpu. Windows 7 and DX11 bring much better support for quad cores.

Dual is enough now but in the long run the quad will be worth it.

but they cost more than the faster Nehalem that has HT support.

edit: so they are kinda fail atm.

Yes but when win7 is released 6 cores might be the shit. Full potential if you know what I mean. Hard to suggest anything for an OS that hasn't been released yet. We can try but...

Core 2 architechture based 6 core cpu can't match a 4 core Nehalem with HT in multithreading. Nehalem architechture is so much superior to Core 2.

OK, from NewEgg.com

Don't really have a budget at this point in time. Just trying to see what I can afford and what I can't.

I already have a pair of HDDs and a pair of DVD drives to throw in the computer. RAM is needed, but I was thinking about starting off with 2GB first and then maybe another 2 later on. I want to build it for the future, so a quad-core might be a good idea? I don't know.

I'd like to have the option to run a paid of video cards in SLi or Crossfire (whatever the difference is aside from nVidia versus ATi) in the future, too. The case doesn't really matter, so let's say ATX size. The PSU I can buy on my own, I don't need help with that.

I'm more interested in seeing what is possible. So if you guys can help, that'd be great.

My point is no one knows what the requirements to use win7 to full potential will be.

What's that saying?

Mights and coulds and maybes - they're all bollocks
Or something like that.

@OP: When Win7 and BF3 are actually available, then we might be able to build a PC round them, but until then, take £3000, buy the best components you can, and then cross your fingers/pray/whatever works for you.

Well for future proof (even though you can never get totally future proof when it comes to PCs, you can only try to be as future proof as possible) you should go with Nehalem, x58 mobo, and 6GBs of ram GFX-4850 should suffice, you can always upgrade when win7 is released along with new DX specs. But if it was me upgrading, I'd just get a C2D and not look at future too much, C2Ds are really cheap these days.

My thoughts exactly.  I want a PC to run the following things that arent even out!  Let alone we have any clue about what they need to run.  On the stipulations made in the OP, all anyone can offer you is guess work.
