Thankful i live in England, where every leader is a douche bag, so we see it coming..

I really don't think Obama is AS socialist as everyone thinks...

I dunno...I just feel people in our country equate socialism with communism, and automatically consider anything given that moniker to be a bad thing.  Communism has largely failed, yet many countries have socialist policies and still maintain a proper, decent government that is able to provide for their citizens.

Isn't the essence of socialist policy that everyone gets equal shares, as opposed to liberal policies which gauge shares based on "need" (i.e. - the poorer or worse off you are, the more aid you get) ???

So McCain's answer of the $5000 "tax break" (even though its a subsidy) for everyone seems more socialist that Obama's plan, at least in the traditional sense.

I think people toss around the word socialism as a scare tactic, and it pisses me off because I don't know how many people even know what it means.



And America is not necessarily doomed...would becoming the #2 nation some day "doom" us?  It took over a century for America to even approach superpower status, and while we've certainly tread down paths that have not been wise since then, I think it's melodramatic to write us off as doomed at this point.

If I recall correctly, there was a guy (the Socialist Party's candidate for prez) on Colbert this week and he explained how Obama, despite being labelled socialist, is actual quite capitalist in his policies.

Wasn't directed at you... it was more general, and if anything at the OP.

One of the problems I have with D&ST I guess, so many younger members with unrealistic idealism complaining about things they have no solution to either.

thats not admiting its socialism. Thats saying THEY call it socialism, but that is not how he sees it.
Besides, its not like we have a purely capitolistic economy. Its not like we have ever pretended to. You have capitolism on one side, socialism on the other and we have always sat in between... We have always had government interviening to keep us from being a purely capitolistic system, what is wrong with a politition admitting that(which he didn't even do)? Its highschool economics for christ sakes.

What are we to do? No revolution? Wait 4 fucking years. 4 years is a really short time when you talking about the life span of the civilization. 4 years is barely enough time for the economy and society to react honestly, thats why so many people reserve judgement on our leaders until years after their first term, and why history often shows a different perspective then what is the common view in the moment.
