How Do You Add More Internal Hard Drives

now i have a 500GB hard drive with Vista on it, i only have 150GB left and want to add 2 hard drives.

now here is what i want.

500GB- has vista installed and will install software on it only
*1TB - now i want a 1TB hard drive and want to put all my music, videos, work, ISO's and back up on that.
*40GB- now on this hard drive i want to install Ubuntu and want to dual boot.

Also i want to be able to access my music/videos etc from the 1TB when i use both Vista and Ubuntu.

what sort of setup is needed and how do you do it?????

what im asking is, is it a case of just plugging them or do you need some sort of raid set up???

Why on earth would you need a RAID set?

Accessing a normal NTFS partition from Ubuntu will be fine. It should have read only access to the drive.

i have no idea, i have never had more than one hard drive in a computer and am confused a bit on adding more

that & afaik 8.10 can now finally reliably write to ntfs

I'm staying with 8.04 for the moment. On second thought I might update my q6600-P5Q rig. The onboard network doesn't work atm. I'm sure there's a fix, but I cba. I just use a PCI card. 8.10 should fix that problem though.

I've got 8.10 on my system at the moment. I can access my other 2 hard drives from in Ubuntu.

I have a bootloader menu with vista, xp and ubuntu on now. I can talk you through setting it up like that if you want.

my main concern was that when i boot into ubuntu/vista which will be on separate drives, in which the 1TB will be used by both, so i would have thought their would have been a set up but it seems not to be the case

OK..... well the only drive of concern to you is the 40GB one. Assuming it's already connected to your pc you need to format it.

Then download the version of ubuntu you want (32/64bit).

Then you need to install it on the drive which is the 'hardest' bit.

i see no benefits from dual booting with linux on another drive. the only reason i use linux is because i wanted to make the most of my old laptop's resources (xp was being a bit of a hog). you're not going to be able to do very much on linux and installing apps/sudo is a PITA and confusing, at least to me. i only use my linuxtop for browsing the web and some light openoffice use.

Most people I know install Linux, bitch about how a certain part doesn't work/they cba to learn it, and go back to XP/Vista. If I were the OP here, I'd buy a 1TB, move everything from my 500GB to my 1TB, and maybe do a 50/50 split of XP and Vista, or a 90/10 of Vista/Linux if you're really that inclined to get Linux. I'd probably convert the 500GB to an external, or backup drive.

And I was looking at >999GB drives and a lot of them had bad reviews saying mainly something along the lines of "Failed after 2 months" "Failed after 3 weeks"

Anyone have thoughts on the above? I was looking into a cheap TB drive in the future for all my.... files *cough*..... but I was turned off by the amount of people saying how it failed on them

If im right about the failure rate, buy a few 640GB drives for 70 bucks a pop

1 out of 8 of my 1TB drives died after a couple of hours. First natural HDD death I've had since '99

Samsung Spinpoint F1, died after about a day. All my 7 other F1s work perfectly fine. IMO just a random fluke. I was long overdue for a HDD dieing on me

i have never had a problem with samsung drives, might be something else killing your drives tbh

ok, so i got a 250GB drive for £25 with P&P, doing to partition that and have 40GB for ubuntu and 200GB for back ups til i get more money for the 1TB
