Do any other companies make a wireless adapter for the Xbox 360? I don't want to spend $100 on the one made by Microsoft.
Thanks.

Buy an old linksys router, convert it to a wireless bridge

When Heggs tried this, there was no good firmware for the hardware  v8 which is what is being sold in stores at the time. I grab older ones from craigslist quite frequently.

My parents are buying a laptop soon. If I can't find a different adapter, then I'll just plug the laptop into my Xbox and set it up that way.

You can't hook it up with ethernet? That's what I did, just ran a cable down neatly.

Lol proprietary networking.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

You're better off just spending the $100. Not only would you have to buy a network card for your laptop (maybe), you'd also have to buy a short ethernet cable. And also set it up. Not to mention the fact that you'd need to hook it up to your laptop every time you want to go online, it's just not convenient.

I mean, I understand you don't want to spend $100. But the laptop option sounds quite silly and it'll only work out to be a little cheaper. Plus it'll also probably slow down your internet, you need a decent connection if you're wanting to do online gaming.

Now I didn't want to throw this in but, this is why the X360 is so much cheaper than the PS3. All the extra features that comes standard with the PS3 have to be bought as expensive additional accessories for the X360.

Two questions:

1) If I got a second wireless router for $40 and hardwired it to my Xbox, how would that give me internet? I tried with an old non-wireless router I had laying around and it didn't work, so how would a new router work?

2) Would a USB thumb drive wireless adapter work? I could plug that into the front of my Xbox, it would obtain a wireless signal from my wireless router upstairs, and theoretically, I should get internet on my Xbox.

it didn't work with the non wireless router because it has no way to receive the signal from your wireless router that is hooked up to the net.  Basically the second router becomes the wireless adapter for the Xbox.

Oh ok. Would that new wireless router use the same IP address as the other wireless router I have upstairs? What about the USB adapter?

You can buy an older wireless router and convert it using dd-wrt to bridge to another router.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge. This make the router router a wireless client as well as a wireless server.

edit: I just did another on this morning WRT54GS v7. This is what it took ... http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Ho … WRT54GS_v7

Your IP address from your ISP  will be the same but it would not have the same IP address on your internal network.

I doubt the USB would work because it would require drivers to function.
