Get a semi-auto .50cal rifle and go explode some deer.

Seriously though, get a .22, you wont be dissapointed as it is suitable for any small game you might want to chase really.

And rabbit tastes nice.

Nope, no such thing.
lol really?

funny, cause after my FFL got approved, that was the first thing i looked at.....appearently the federal government is under the impression that type of license exists....

a Class III dealers license you mean?
I mean a Type 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 Federal Firearms License, plus a Class 3 Special Occupational Tax status.
License to be a dealer plus tax status to be a NFA dealer, not "license" to be an NFA-dealer.  It's mostly semantics, but sometimes wording becomes important.  It would suck to pay for a type 3 FFL under the assumption that you could then deal in NFA items.  I've heard of one guy setting up a Trust that is/isn't considered an "individual or corporation" under parts of the '34 NFA...so he could technically manufacture, register, and possess a post '86, non-dealer sample, legal machine gun.  I never quite heard the resulting opinion of the BATFE on that technicality, lol.

If you are hunting try to get a winchester or marlin in a 30-06 or .243. Either gun will let you take deer.
If you are hunting where there is lots of bush then you might want a gun with a heavier bullet that won't deflect off of leaves easily. If you are bush hunting then look for a marlin 444 or 45-70

P.S. if you are going to buy a scope, buy a good scope in a reasonable size. you really don't need a super powerful sniper scope to get deer. save some money on the scope and put it towards a better rifle.

My personal deer rifle is a winchester model 70 30-06 rocky mountain elk edition with a small scope. its nice and light and shoots straight.
good hunting.

I used to work for this company and these scopes are fucking unbelievable and they are priced less then a comparable Leopold. They are crystal clear and can take a beating.

Also here is a sight that offers pretty good pricing and a wide variety of rifles.

Why not just go for the .375H&H?  The op obvously knows very little about firearms and you're telling him to get a 45-70?  He need to a get a practical feel for firearms before he goes anywhere near 300-500gr. lead slingers.

For an enjoyable day at the range, for very little money, get a Ruger 10/22T.  $15 gets you 1250 rounds of decent ammo

From a previous thread;

RDX-fX wrote:

Just get a Ruger 10/22T

With proper ammo and cleaning, it will reliably hold penny-sized groups at 100m.
My particular 10/22T likes Federal AutoMatch (Tan box, $15 for 1250 rounds), and Lapua Match (when I can get it)

A good .22 is an excellent training tool.  The skills you learn at 100m with a .22, will carry you out to 600m with a larger caliber centerfire rifle.  Windage, bullet drop, trigger pull, barrel cleanliness, flinch, sight picture, etc.

https://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg35/dixie_rebel669/sniper005.jpg
Note: Image isn't my rifle, but one that looks almost exactly like it

It's a Ruger .22, semi-auto, 10 round magazine.  It's arguably THE most common semi-auto .22 in America.

The "10/22 Target" comes with a heavy target barrel, custom trigger, adjustable stock (Fajen), and no iron sights (need a scope)

You really really don't want to screw with an AR-15 with a subcaliber device.  We had those nightmare devices in the Army, for the indoor ranges.  They sucked.  Badly.

I think mine was about $400 for the rifle (w/ custom stock, trigger, barrel included from factory).  Add $50 for a .22 level scope, or $150 for a proper Nikon or Leupold 10x scope.  Add another $25-$50 for scope rings to mount the scope to the rifle.  Have someone that truly knows what they're doing assemble the package - and teach you how to shoot properly
For a decent hunting rifle, you really can't go wrong with a Remington 700.  It's the baseline standard for American hunting rifles.  If you think you want upgrades, accessories, and parts available later - the 700 is a good safe bet.

They run $700 - $800 for a base model.
http://www.remington.com/products/firea … 00_SPS.asp

For out-of-the-box Competition/Match worthy rifles that wouldn't be out of place in a hunting trip;
$1200  Savage F-TR is supposedly very good.  I've not tried one myself, but according to their press, they're almost on par with rifles costing 2x to 3x as much.  Almost.

Now,below is only if you want to go full-tilt apeshit; (hint: you don't)
Remington model 700 action (short action .308) or similar like http://www.surgeonrifles.com/products/actions/
Badger Ordinance M5 Trigger Guard w/ detachable 5-rd or 10-rd magazines http://www.badgerordnance.com/
Badger Ordinance Muzzle Break, Bolt Knob, Sine indicator, etc, etc
McMillan A-5 stock
Bartlein, Shillen, or Lilja barrel (22" to 24" for .308)

http://www.gaprecision.net/crusader.html is an assembled rifle very similar.. but for $3500

I know its heavy lead but if your in heavy brush and you can only see the deer 100 yards or less then a big bore bush gun is the right one to get. The heavy lead will stay on target better through the bush. Besides a 444 marlin is more gentle to shoot than my model 70 30-06. also if you are hunting in brush with a 444 marlin you probably won't need the scope, just shoot with the irons and practice practice practice before you go out and know what you are shooting at before you shoot.

But if you are shooting in more open area you can't go wrong with a .243. that's a good starter gun for deer.

though I always wondered what a 458 win mag would do to a deer?

PS I agree with the others that it is a good idea to get a nice .22 to practice with.

get a Ruger

the M77 series is good, lot's of scope options. They go up to .375 cal.(lots of power) they also make a .270

can't go wrong with a Remington either.

if you want to get something military..any of the old Mosins will make a nice hunting rifle if you pick a good rifle..and it's cheap.

have a gunsmith clean the bore out for you though..because you will be spending alot of time otherwise.

went hunting 2 years back in Northern Nevada. Bagged a 160 lb deer with a mosin from 130 yards give or take.

most are crap though..this was just an experiment..mosin where developed quickly and designed for grunts, unless you get a sniper spec rifle with slant bolt.

getting away from the weirdness. Any modern hunting rifle in .270+ cal is more then enough for any mid size North American game.

I just got my Weatherby 7mm Mag last year and really like it.  It's priced right in line with the Remington 700 series.  The thing I like about it is that the round has been around long enough and is popular enough that you can get it anywhere.  It will also reach out quite bit further, with a flatter trajectory that the 06.

.30-06 is indeed a decent hunting round, 'all American' if you want, plus you can get a Garand and stick it in an EBR stock if you like modular. If you modernize a bit and shift to the .308 a whole new range of available arms opens up. Get an old British surplus L1A1 if you can. It's beautifull from a aesthetical perspective and dead accurate.

Sounds stupid, but he's right though. The 7.62x54 rimmed is a very popular hunting cartridge in Russia and if it works for Russians, it'll work for you. You could indeed get a SVD (authentic Russian produce imported to the US by KBI I think) or the civilianised Tiger. That way you should be able to get a real military rifle (DMR), if you fancy, without much hassle as it is semi only and holds 10 rounds max.

Abyway a SVD may be a bit overkill though, but if you're into Russian gear you should really consider the 7.62x54. You should be able to get a Mosin Nagant for not too much money, it's epic and a more than decent hunting rifle (perhaps somewhat long). If you do, try to get the sniper version as they were selected for accuracy, have the bolt handle bent down and are actually intended to be fired without the pike bayonet attached
