Alright, I already asked this question, but it wasn't really clear to me. I have a router in my game room and I use that router for internet in my room for this computer. The device in my room looks like this:

https://i00.twenga.com/p/57/36/45736vb.png

I guess this would be called the receiver or something, but would I be able to plug this little device into an xbox 360 and get internet on my xbox that way? I've asked people and I've heard mixed answers. Some people say it will work, but some tell me that I have to buy something from Microsoft that costs like $100, and I'm not going to spend that much on a little device to get wireless.

So would plugging this thing into my xbox give my wireless internet if I have a router in my game room?

the 100 buck ripoff is to recieve wireless signals from a router, if youre just directly connecting it to the xbox then it wont matter where it comes from.

That's a WiFi dongle, if your modem/router are going to be in the same room, then it'll be much cheaper and easier to just run a 10 foot cable.

If you were to get a wireless router and put it in a different room, then you should still try to run a cable, but if that's not possible, then wireless is what you'd have to do,

The XBox360 is locked down to only the stock Microsoft $100 dongle, sad as it is, since you're asking this question, I assume you don't know about Wireless networking, let alone Linux, you COULD spend $50 on a Linksys WRT54G install Linux on it, make it connect to your wireless network as a client and run a cable, but that's fairly complicated and unrecommended for the complete novice.

So if you can put the modem and router in the same room as the 360, DO it and run a cable,
Next best would be Wireless, $100 for the Microsoft dongle and around $50 for a WiFi router.(Yours WILL NOT work)
For you, I wouldn't recommend DD-WRT/Linux, but it's a possibility.

Just get a cheap LAN-WLAN bridge.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Well does anybody know a cheap alternative that will allow me to run my xbox wirelessly?

Microsoft have locked their XBox so only the actual Microsoft Wireless adapter is compatible (the problem is, it's like 100$).

Your best bet would be wired.

How would that be possible? I don't have a phone jack in my room. There's only like two on my entire second floor.

What about the CAT5 plug in the back of my computer? Would I be able to put the ethernet cable in there and use the wireless from my PC?

Supposedly you can plug your xbox directly in to your computer and leech off its wifi. That way you can use any adapter you want.

I want to try this, it's probably my only hope.

Could somebody try this out for me if they are extremely bored or something?

Here are some vague instructions I found.

1. Click on start. 2. Go to 'Connect to'. 3. Right click on 'Wireless Network Connection'. 4. Click on properties. 5. Go to the 'advanced' tab. 6. Make sure both boxes are checked. 7. Click on ok. Make sure your xbox is connected to your computer with an ethernet cable and you should now be able to connect to xbox live!

The person I got it from claimed it works.

I get an error when I try that. Does the xbox have to be connected for it to work without getting an error?

Wouldnt this Microsoft Adapter hard wiring be a monopoly and thus illegal?  I mean, its not like any other adapter couldnt do the job if they didnt make it so.

Who cares if it's illegal? I'm not paying $100 for their stupid wireless adapter.
