It really depends on your budget and personal preference. Wharfedale Diamond 9.1s are great value. Mordaunt do some awesome speaker sets. The Acoustic Energy AE1 MkIII speakers are mind-blowingly good. Hopefully you already have a decent home cinema Amp (Arcam and NAD do some very nice ones, I have a NAD one, but it's getting a bit dated now).

If you want a PC speaker set then that's different. If you're looking for a lot of delicacy and subtle tones then the Bose 2.1 40326 Companion speakers are very nice, if you want super cheap and good at loud and clunky stuff (like gaming and action films) I'd have to recommend some of the THX rated Logitech ones.

For PC (not really related to op), I'd recommend the Z4 for listening to music actually. The subwoofer is plenty (I can hear it outside if I turn the bass all the way up), and really, some types of music are often best played in 2.1 (or ideally with two very good speakers, but then I don't want to hook up a theater system to the comp). It's also only 99 US.

Personally, when i got my new TV recently.... we got a Phillips soundbar. (it replicates 5.1 surround sound with one big long speaker and a sub)

we went for thing option because my mum didnt want speaker and/or cables all around the living room.
The soundbar does gives great quality sound.... probably not as good as a full surround sound setup.... but it looks great and u dont have tonnes of speakers around the place. so i can recomment that.

EDIT: it also has a HD DVD player in it... so it converts regular DVDs (not HD DVDs) to HD (1080p)
and comes with an iPod dock

Sorry for not being a bit more specific. 500$ would be about the most I could spend, thanks for everyone's reply's so far, Ill look up all the suggestions.

EDIT:
Oh, and I need them for the TV, not a PC.

Samsung and Philips do good sound systems, as do harmon/kardon. I'm currently running h/k Soundsticks on my HANNspree TV and it's fucking A+
