Sounds weird I know but...he has a P3 from 2001 and it's in desperate need of a replacement. It's less than 1GHz processor and <512MB of RAM I think.

He mainly uses it for word processing and e-mail. No real need of powerful parts.

Are there any pre-built machines for under $300 that would suit his needs. My parents just wanted to get him a new 22" monitor so he could actually see what he's doing but I doubt a 7 year old machine would be able to run that thing at native res.

Anything nowadays is better than a P3. Judging by the year, he's probably using Windows Me too, so XP would be a nice stability upgrade for him too.

You could see about getting a *cough* copy *cough* of XP and put it on the P3. I've been working on one all day today and its slow compared to all our wonderful dual-cores nowadays, but it gets the job done.

Yeah he used to have ME but we put XP Pro on it for him.

That HP looks pretty good.

Just give him your PC and buy yourself a new one. I always give mine to my sister and build myself a new one.

Major OEMs: yes.
System Builder OEM: no. Feb 2009.

Though you'll notice I never mentioned the word "buy"

I have noticed that I was just asking cos I didn't know for sure. First they said the would stop selling it then they extended the deadline so I don't know now.

Buy him an EEE PC 900 or an EEE PC 4G. Slap an 8GB-16GB SDHC card into the side of it and call it a day. I'd get the 900 cuz of the bigger screen, though.

I think he needs a bigger screen.

That would be good budget wise but I don't think he could work with the 8.9"screen. He sits about half a foot away from the screen he has now and it's a 17"

We're not ordering it, we're picking it up in the store. He just moved to a new house and he needs his computer set up sooner rather than later so...

To answer your question ebug - that looks OK, specs are 'bout right for the price, will be more than powerful enough for what you said your Grandpa will use it for.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
