I like to turn off my computer every night before I go to sleep so that it doesn't get too hot in my room, but there will be times when I put it in standby instead.

Are there any precautions to putting it in standby?

Things like:
-If I keep putting it in standby instead of shutting it down, will it get slower? If so, how often should I do a complete and total shutdown (or reboot)?
-Should it not be in standby for an extended period of time? How long exactly is "an extended period of time"?

Also, I did a search and in one thread someone mentioned something about how "contrary to popular belief, many computers still use the same amount of power in hibernate as opposed to being left on". Is that really true? (Not that it matters anyway since the power bill here is split 4 ways).

As always, thanks for any help

Hibernation just takes the data on your RAM and stores it temporarily on your harddrive, then it shuts down. It doesnt draw any more power than it does when shut off. Proof: you can hibernate a desktop and unplug it from the wall and still have it come back up just fine when you plug it back in and turn it on

As for the standby, AFAIK it wont slow your computer down. I wouldnt leave something in standby past a few days, but I really doubt it would hurt it.

I had a laptop I used to never turn off, just put in standby. After 6 months or so, when I started to actually turn it off, it took ages to turn on each time. Like a really long time.

Short periods, not all the time wont do anything though.

Shut-off/reboot is win.  Only time you leave it on is when your D/L torrents/other shit.

Would you leave your car running?  Exactly, so turn your computer off.

with each standby, your RAM usage will increase gradually until eventually you will have to reboot. i would say around 8 standbyes then you should reboot. also, things will start to act funky after a while...kinda hard to explain. things like sound not working or your browser forgets your settings.

I never have that problem, haffey. I always use standby/hibernate on my laptop at home. It never leaves the desk, though. But I've yet to have any real issues with it.

Never experienced anything like that. I probably go 30+ standbys before reboot.

This argument always comes up.  I personally leave my computer on 24/7, I can't even remember the last time I actually turned it off.  I've never used standby or hibernate.  Plus, your computer should be on 24/7 because you should be folding for the bf2s team!

Maybe it's just my install of Vista then.  It IS a little old.  Some things are acting kooky even without coming from standby.  Time for a reinstall soon...

edit: The RAM usage thing stands though.
