A NORTHERN Territory woman says she will have nightmares for the rest of her life after an horrific operation gone wrong at the Alice Springs Hospital.During the ordeal Rebecca Jones, 24, claims she woke up during abdominal surgery and could feel every cut of the surgeon's knife, the Centralian Advocate reports.

But she was unable to scream for help as the anaesthesia had paralysed her.Ms Jones said she woke up just as doctors were about to start the full operation. She was paralysed and could not open her eyes, but could hear and feel everything.

"I was very aware of what was happening to me," she said."I thought the doctors had woken me up because the surgery was over - I quickly realised that was not the case."It first hit me when I tried to take a breath. I couldn't move and started to panic. I could feel them cutting me open.   I can't describe how it felt. I've never felt anything like it before."I was freaked out. Then I actually managed to move my hand and someone in the room noticed it."He said, 'she's just moved her hand'. But they kept going. I was trying to scream, to do anything."The hospital's general manager Vicki Taylor has refused to meet with Ms Jones over the issue and refused to be interviewed last night.

In a written statement last night, Ms Taylor conceded Ms Jones had been "awake" during the operation to remove her gall bladder. She denied the hospital knew of Ms Jones' pain. But an official hospital review of the case stated a second anesthetist had found "the administration of the anesthetic may not have been adequate" and adjustments were made.Ms Jones said hospital staff had been "well aware" she was in agony."My husband was told that I'd almost died on the operating table," she said."Doctors said the heart machine was going crazy, my oxygen levels were really low and my blood pressure was high."Ms Jones has discussed the case with the NT Health Ombudsman and is considering legal action.

Wow, from what i read, about the heart rate machine being off the way, and other vital sign levels and them seeing the hand move... shouldn't they have known something was wrong?

Anasethyologists (sp) are the highest paid types of doctors in the world.

That happened to me briefly during my wisdom teeth removal surgery. I couldn't open my eyes, but I could hear the doctors talking to each other as well as what sounded like a chainsaw getting rammed down my mouth. I could also feel them grinding something up in the back of my mouth, but "feel" as in I knew it was there, but I couldn't feel any pain. And it was only for a second or two anyway.

OT: Sucks to be this woman. I can't even imagine what she must've felt. Time to make big bucks off a lawsuit! Yipee!

Anesthesiologists.

Got it on the first try.

It's actually relatively common considering the sheer number of surgeries that occur every day across the globe

Yes it's the anaesthetist's job to check changes in vitals, tearing in the eyes etc. but if you've ever been in the theatre you'll see that they're the laziest buggers ever.  They come in, put the patient to sleep, sit down and read the paper for the rest of the procedure, then make make sure that the patient wakes up postop. Easy money

There is some new monitor that measures brain activity that is supposed to drastically reduce the chances of anesthesia awareness.

I heard about that like over a year ago, I thought everyone uses em by now?

But back to my first thought when reading the title:

This is news!?!

By this point, I thought everyone's heard some form of surgery horror story of waking up >.<

This isn't a 1 off event either. I have heard of similar cases (outside of Aus) where the exact same thing has happened.

Not sure how much compensation she'll get. My bet is lots. lol

I think brain surgeons are higher paid, but anesthesiologists are definitely up there.

You can even make a surprising amount as an X-ray technician.

If this was a story about the doctor folding a patients genitals while they were under, I bet you'd be making another dentist appointment asap.

I was fully consious during my wisdom teeth removal as I presume many others have been as well. I didn't even know you could put under general anesthesia for that procedure.

i've had minor surgery and was watching the doc make three, one inch incisions into my arms.  I could feel the cut being made, but there was no pain...just a strange feeling that's all.

However, the anesthetic wore off by the time the third incision was made, ya not nice...
