Do you think they could spend a little on BF4?

$50 million in funding has been approved for the Army to establish a unit that will develop games. The purpose of the games will be to train soldiers for various tasks, and they say there is no intent to compete with commercial games. We've previously discussed other efforts by the Army to integrate games into their training programs. "Col. Mark McManigal, the capabilities manger for gaming under the Training and Doctrine Command, said the selected game must provide low-cost training and must not require large number of technicians to run. It must also have a play-back function for after-action reviews, he said. 'One of the major events for training is to be able to capture all these events, good or bad, throughout the entire scenario,' he said. Trainers must be able to edit the game during play to change the difficulty level or add complexity to an exercise. For example, they must also be able to edit terrain to replicate training areas or combat zones, he said."

Yea but they still won't have the money to produce a PC capable of running that game.

There is no way a video game combat situation is anything like an irl combat situation.

no, a video game would not be able to simulate combat effectively.

but what it CAN do is run all sorts of scenarios, from calling in artillery strikes and close air support, to practicing the procedures in the event of a transport helicopter crash.

it could save a ton of money and allow situations that just wouldnt be safe to practice in real life.

i agree that there is nothing like the real thing... but this is the best and most cost effective way to train the troops...
cthe military game simulators are pretty realistic also... I talked with a guy who designed the headsets they wear(troops can interact with simulator helicopter pilots) and he said it's amazing...
I told him i modded video games and he asked if i thought people would pay for these headsets in a civilian version...(he said it would be in the 1000s of dollars though)
I said it sounded great but the pricetag was too high.. if the price was well below a 1000 then he may have something...

and with the advent of faster and better comps the simulators will blur the lines between real and simulation...

I'm sure DARPA is working on how that'll happen.  Imaging for a second that the best gamers in the United States are controlling robots in enemy zones.

Now imagine you controlling a robot or aircraft in a 8-5 job at your local military base.

Far fetched?  No.  Possible?  Yes.  Probable.  You betcha.

The term "Video Game War" takes a whole new meaning now...

This...

I mean, look at the UCAV's being developed.  Look at robots in the field: Sword, Scorpion just to name a couple (there are lots o prototypes as well.)  We already have folks sitting in nice comfy rooms in Arizona, New Mexico and I'm sure other locations, popping off Hellfires and such from Predator drones.
With the UCAV's...jesus...they are autonomous (or can be) as well as having direct input from folks sitting in nice comfy chairs in Arizona, New Mexico...see where this is going?
UCAV's can carry a hell of a lot larger stores that a Predator, and are a damn sight faster.  So now (or soon) you dont have to spend all the huge money to train a pilot, you simply flip a switch, or click a button...the UCAV flies to the combat zone, the human takes over...when the mission is complete, you flip a switch, or click a button and the beast flies itself back to base.

The "video game war" is on us.  We are only seeing the first infant steps.

Terminator anyone?  hehe

Nah, I dont see that happening, not anytime soon anyway, but the possibilites are staggering tbh.

Didn't some SWAT team or similar use the first Rainbow 6 back in the nineties for tactical training? I recall reading something like that. After all it was quite well made.

Thinking: painting rocks, polishing brass, or waxing floors - lol

Generation Y and future generations is all about being connected to the computer/Internet. The U.S. Army has a good approach, hopefully; the new game will help change the newbie's mindset to think of tactics rather than a better MySpace homepage.

Video Game war? No chance. Even against rag tag Taliban fighters etc.. and low intensity conflicts, you still need real people on the ground doing real jobs, infact moreso even if it's one of those conflicts.

And if we get to the stage where it ends up machine vs machine from people controlling them thousands of miles away, all it means is that it's going to be a case of "first one to bypass machine and kill fatass controlling it in chair wins" - we've gone from using stones and spears to controlling robots but at the end of the day it's still the same reason, to kill the other guy. We're just inventing more steps in between

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

AA 3.0 have been in development for like 3-4 years and the only image i've seen was a concept drawing of a map, and some new weapons.
