Can you buy a 2x2gb kit and then buy a 2gb stick( same type, specs, and brand of ram) and stick into tri channel for Core i7?

The ram voltage is 1.5 and its DDR3 of course.

I've heard from another forums that you cant do this and i dont see why not. A dual channel kit shoul work with a stick that is the sme type from the same brand, basically all the samespecs.

I really see no argument as to why it wouldn't work.

No you can't.

And I don't see why you'd want to.

Sure you can, as long as the 3 sticks have the same specs.  What's your other option?  Buying 3 sticks individually, or maybe some fancy "tri-channel kit"?  The "kits" don't really mean anything, it's just a sales gimmick and makes finding two identical sticks easier.

I'm just talking out my ass though, since I've never actually tried this.

Of course you can. Hell, they don't even need to be identical, you'll just be limited to the speed/timings of the worst stick

Alright, so Tri channel is different in that aspect than dual channel then?

I've always thought the same was true of dual channel.

Kits are just 2 (or 3, now) in a bag.

You can go dual-channel or tri-channel with basically any sticks of the same size. Hell, I'm running 1x Kingston 512MB, 1x Corsair 512MB, 1x Buffalo 512MB and 1x noname 512MB in dual-channel in a crap rig here.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I was unable to get dual-channel with 2, or 4, random sticks.

You can probably run 9GB in tri-channel (3x2GB + 3x1GB) just like I'm running 6GB in dual channel (2x2GB + 2x1GB)

having a motherboard with 6DIMMs seems rather nessesary for that theory....

i was assuming his talking about a RAM upgrade or similar... not buying a new rig.

He is talking about DDR3 and i7, and the i7 is a LGA1366.

The architecture is optimized for tri-channel, therefore the standard would be 6 RAM slots, like the dual channel has 4 RAM slots.
Although, AFAIK there are some 1366 mobos that only have 4 RAM slots.

4 slots.

Although other results show up as 3 slots.

lol waht the fail to have 4 slots on 3 channel board. btw that is a prototype that was never published.
