Feds warn of terror plotting against NYC subways

Federal authorities are warning law enforcement personnel of a possible terror plot against the New York City subway system during the holiday season.

    An internal memo obtained by The Associated Press says the FBI has received a “plausible but unsubstantiated” report that al-Qaida terrorists in late September may have discussed attacking the subway system.

    FBI spokesman Richard Kolko confirmed only that his agency and the Department of Homeland Security issued a bulletin last night to state and local authorities, and the information is being reviewed.

    Department of Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said the warning was issued as a routine matter, but added that there may be an increased police presence in New York and other large metropolitan areas.

He owned a Arabic book, clothing, etc. store next the Mosque/Vet. on 5th. Son was caught and arrested; the father just went on with his life running the store(he had no involvement).

Not really a "familiar" face.

It sounds like you take it like we take our hurricane warnings. With the Neo's securely on the way out it's hard to simply say "fear mongers". That is until the masses turn on the anointed one.

Honesty, what are we supposed to do with these warnings? Stay off the subways? People have to get to work and school. At least with a hurricane one could board up the house and tie things down. A soldier can't just walk out of the suck. Fear no longer drives us. These threats are a part of life. There's similar threats against the LIRR so I hear...a lot of commuters take the trains from the base stations in Port Washington and Ronkonkoma to the City (Penn Station usually) for work.

TBH, any person can attack our subway/bus system. There is a bus stop every 2-5 blocks you walk and subway stations not too far away from each other. The NYPD has their "Random Bag checks" every so often at populated Subway Stations but that won't stop anyone from going on the train through another less-secure station.

There's really not much they can do. There is such a huge commute going on in places like Penn Station, especially now. It's an absolute fucking madhouse. I remember being in the city last year on Dec. 23rd...one of the best, yet the worst experiences of my life.

I've not become complacent. I accept the situation that I am in. However; I stay very aware of things going on around me. The most I can do to actually combat the terrorism is as Poseidon said, report suspicious activities and unattended bags. In the event of a dude pulling out a detonator on the train and yelling "God is great", the best I can do is A) tackle him if I'm close enough. or B) Hope "Don't Fear the Reaper" is playing on my iPod.

You might not have but I absolutely guarantee that some have. 9/11 was seven years ago. I'm sure there are plenty of people who have moved to the city post 9/11. They are the ones who probably need a friendly reminder. .. but from what I gather this wasn't intended to be public knowledge. That is unless it was an intentional leak designed to "cover asses".. as san4 suggested.

My Dad and my best friend are both from the city. Funny story, my Mom is from the deep south (Ga). I had a fun household growing up...lol.
