RCMP investigating Facebook group over 'Kick a Ginger' day
They say blonds have more fun, but it was redheads who might have got a bigger kick on Thursday, dubbed by some as Kick a Ginger Day.
Across the country, school boards had to contend with a joke from an episode of the satirical animated show South Park that has spiralled into a day of promoting violence.
The Vancouver Island boy said the group, which had nearly 5,000 members from across Canada and internationally, was only a joke and he is sorry.
The page, which urges members to "get them steel toes ready," had garnered hundreds of messages. Many were from people claiming to have already kicked redheads that day; others expressed outrage.
The page's teenage administrator said he didn't make the group, but inherited it after its original creator got in trouble.
"It was a joke," he said. "I'll message everybody and say I'm sorry that this offended people."
Comox Valley RCMP Const. Tammy Douglas said the group is being investigated and those involved could face charges.
"We do treat this sort of thing seriously," she said. "This is sort of inciting hate. It's a hate crime really."
Ironically, the day falls in the middle of the international Bullying Awareness Week.
In St. John's, N.L., schools warned students they'd be disciplined if they acted on the joke.
Tony Stack, principal of St. Peter's, a grades 7 to 9 school near St. John's, said they were told about the event by parents of red-headed kidsRCMP in B.C. are investigating the 14-year-old administrator of a Facebook group called "National Kick a Ginger Day, are you going to do it?" Tony Stack, principal of St. Peter's, a grades 7 to 9 school near St. John's, said they were told about the event by parents of red-headed kids.
In Flin Flon, Man., an elementary school sent a letter home to parents alerting them and their children to the possibility of disturbances.
And in Sylvan Lake, Alta., one red-haired student said she and her 13-year-old sister were punched and kicked by their peers when they got to school.
In the episode of South Park in question, Ginger Kids, one character - Eric Cartman - begins a campaign against red heads, calling them soulless and inherently evil.
Brenda Morrison, a criminology professor at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., said she was "shocked" to find out about the day.
Morrison, who has written extensively on bullying, said social networking websites such as Facebook or MySpace provide conduits that make bullying in school much easier, as they allow for information to be spread rapidly and with little supervision from adults or authorities.
"Anything that legitimizes (bullying), we should take care to control, as a community, as caring adults," she said, noting that her husband and son are redheads.
Morrison said school boards should be made aware of the event, so that any abusive incidents can be treated like they would any other day of the year.
"Gingerism" is a growing concern in the United Kingdom, home to the largest proportion of redheads in the world. In 2003, a young man was stabbed repeatedly over a dispute about his red hair.
In 2007, a ruby-headed Newcastle family said they had to move because of endless abuse from their neighbours, and no less than Prince Harry was singled out as the "Ginger Bullet Magnet" when he served a tour of duty in Iraq.

TORONTO — Ontario may be willing to back off from a proposed regulation that would restrict teen drivers to just one teenage passenger in a car, Premier Dalton McGuinty suggested Wednesday after an online protest against the new rules grew to more than 117,000 members.

The protest group was set up on Facebook last week after the Liberal government announced a package of reforms aimed at young drivers, including a zero blood-alcohol limit for all drivers 21 and under and licence suspensions for those caught speeding.

Most of the objections are to the new limits on teen passengers for drivers with a G2 graduated licence, something Mr. McGuinty said he's also been hearing from backbench Liberals. The government may not have got everything correct when it drafted the new legislation, the Premier added.

“Everything we do we try to do the best that we can by way of an initiative, but governments never, ever do everything perfectly,” he said when asked directly if he was prepared to ease the teen passenger restrictions. “If there are folks out there who can give us good ideas that enable us to strengthen and improve the quality of our legislation, then we are all ears.”

The government said statistics show young people with other teens in the car are three times more likely to get in an accident. That logic that was questioned on Facebook by Jim Bergen, a student at Brock University in St. Catharines.

“They say we're the most likely to be involved in accidents, so they throw more of us on the road by taking away carpooling,” Mr. Bergen posted.

Shannon Ramey, a high school student in London, Ont., warned that eliminating carpooling by teens would mean fewer designated drivers, and a likely increase in drinking and driving by young people.

“They mean well, but they need to look at it at all angles,” Ms. Ramey posted. “I totally disagree with the carpool rules. Drunk driving should never be tolerated, but they need to come up with a better plan.”

The opposition parties said the government was obviously caught off guard by the “overwhelming” negative reaction to the proposed new rules for young drivers, especially from young people themselves.

“The McGuinty government understands there's not much support across Ontario for this, and they should have understood that before they set out to restrict young people like that,” NDP Leader Howard Hampton said.

“The whole idea of restricting young drivers to only one other teen passenger in the car just doesn't hold water, especially once you get outside large cities where public transit is not available.”

The Progressive Conservatives said Mr. McGuinty is ready to back down because the government is being swamped with complaints in addition to the huge Facebook protest.

“They're certainly getting a lot of heat, and I think the [government] backbenchers are feeling the heat as well,” Opposition Leader Bob Runciman said. “I'm not surprised that they're going to look at the passenger component” of the legislation.

Mr. McGuinty said his government has inadvertently engaged young people in an important debate, and he wants to make sure they stay engaged.

“They seem to have pulled away from politics in some ways, but I think we've got their attention unwittingly — this was never our purpose, obviously — but they've become engaged so I'd like to find a way to listen to them.”

The Premier also conceded the Liberals had been hasty in banning access to Facebook from Ontario government computers, but stopped short of saying all civil servants will be able to visit the social networking site.

“We may have been a bit precipitous in completely cutting ourselves off from that new tool,” he said.

“We're going to find a way to speak to young people, and more importantly have them speak to us through Facebook.”

"That's ginger hair!"

"No, it's dark blonde"

"Your a ginger! Get him!"

"Ahh, it's blonde!"

How can a argument start like that and lead to a stabbing? Fucking chavs.
