RIP my hard drives

So, I have two hard drives. 150 gb raptor and 110ish gb samsung that I use as a back up. I was going to move my personal files from the raptor to the samsung and reformat the raptor to have a nice, clean install of windows.

I pull the data cable from the samsung drive, boot into windows to confirm I was reformatting the correct drive, boot into windows fine, ans shut down to boot from windows disk.

Push the power button, power supply goes *pop*, won't turn on again. Awesome.

Long story short, old power supply dead for sure, new power supply working for sure. Only problem is now neither drive is recognized in the bios of that machine or another machine. Even more awesome.

So, what are my options? I have ~20 gig of data that is on both drives that would be my top priority to get off, and it would be awfully nice to save one or both drives if that would be possible. I don't hold out much hope for the latter however.

sounds like when your PSU died it also took HDDs with it if you know what I mean. Power fluctuations...

It could be possible to replace the hard drive controller if you find one, however that's a lot of work.

Curious, what PSU did you have that fried?

Antec 550W chameleon. I had been having some problems with it, whenever I messed with the insides at all I had to mess with it a fair bit before I could get it to turn on again. I had been looking at buying a new power supply just a few days ago anyways actually, so I'm not really worked up at having to get a new PSU.

Replaced with a Thermaltake Toughpower 700W.

Try getting a quote for data recovery. PC world (a really really bad PC chain shop over here) do it for like £20 i think

I doubt that they do it for broken drives for that price ...

"Geeksquad" said $150 for in-house data recovery, which I'm pretty sure is oops-I-didn't-mean-to-delete-that recovery, not it will take an act of god to make my platters spin kind of recovery.

Unless they can make the drive spin again, data recovery would cost several thousand $$ as a specialist would have to open the drive ans transfer the platters, etc. Very expensive.

If the controller board is fried then it wont work. As CrazeD said if you find an identical HD with matching firmware and board layout then the swap is very straight forward (remove 6 or so screws and replcae). My 400Gb Seagate IDE drive's board is gone but im not paying £50 for a replacement board, will keep an eye on eBay for one.

Would attaching each HDD to an external enclosure work at all? That's what I would try. They're only like $20 and useful to have around. Give that a try. Just order some new HDDs and the enclosure, get the new HDDs installed (with maybe a new mobo?) and see if it works then. Then once you got Windows up and running, plug your other HDDs to the enclosure and start copying files.

Yeah the drives aren't recognized on other computers. I'm going to order an identical drive board for the Samsung and try to get the data off, and am rushing a new hard drive from newegg now.

there is a program called getdataback (yes its all one word.) Its a great program to get data off so called dead hard drives. I used it when my hard rive failed a few years ago. Use Google to find the site

Of course there's the old mythical temporary-cure for getting data off dead hard-drives...

Put them in the freezer for an hour or two and then try to boot them up. Depends what actually broke them in the first place, but this works for a lot of hard-drives with header/reading problems. You won't have anything to lose by trying it if you have failed to rescue the information via all other means

your only option is to send them to drive savers, i had to send a 500gb one in and was prepared to spend 4k (all my pictures) but it was too far gone:(
