My iPod mini's a bit outdated. I want something around $200 or less. Option to play videos would be nice.

I was looking at an iPod touch 8GB or a Microsoft Zune (inb4zunetrolling).

Any other suggestions?

I'd recomend an iRiver Clix2, Creative XFi or a Cowom.

edit - oh yeah, the sansas are great too <3

In what way is the mini outdated? The sound is still the same quality. You want to watch videos on it?

It's a bit banged up and the battery doesn't last as long as it used to. Running out of space too.

Creative XFi is looking tempting at the moment. Sill looking at reviews though.

dear lord my mini ran out of battery a year and a half after i bought it.  i would fully charge it and it'd be empty in 30 minutes.  no backlight on either.  you got a good one...

i would go for the touch, but that might be just because i have one.

I sent it in last year to have the battery replaced. I didn't know it would last this long though cause they stopped making stuff for the mini's a couple years ago.

Best recommendations aside from the usual iPod/Zune. I have a Cowon D2, love it.

If you want another iPod get an iPod classic 120gb. It'll be about $200US I think.

I think that if the iPod touch is only 8gb, you could fit 16 full length movies on it, max, without any music at all so why bother?

A typical movie when ripped from dvd or avi to your ipod using this free software here (along with a step by step guide) that I use frequently will convert a typical movie to about half a gig at max audio and visual quality. It's great and free, I've got the whole Bourne series, etc on my iPod that I converted from avi files. And movies I've converted from dvd's also.

The quality actually improves when you display it on your ipod screen, because it doesn't just resize them but makes sure the quality is excellent for that resolution. It's perfect.

With a 120gb classic I've got about 60gb of music, and about 20gb of movies(so that's about 40 movies) with plenty of room for more.

If you don't think you'll use that much, get an 80gb iPod. The warranty on them is always good, you'll get a free replacement even if you drop it. lol Just don't tell them that.

And I wouldn't recommended a zune, simply because it's from Micro$oft.

edit: changed 20gb of movies = 40 movies (had it the other way around lol)

No, I'm sorry, no it won't. One, no way in hell can you rip an hour and a half film to half a gig at DVD quality. If that was possible, the industry would be using CD's. Two, to be pedantic, it's impossible. Any transcoding loses quality.

That makes no sense, resolution and picture quality are two different things. Perhaps it optimizes it for the display, but certainly not the resolution.

You got your math wrong on that one.

Fanboyism, the deathblow to whatever advice you had.

Ofc you can. DVD's resolution is just a bit better than NTSC/PAL (PAL is even a bit worse but just giving example). Blurays don't have the quality to fill a full 40 bluray. The industry artificially expands the movie's capacity so you won't be able to record the same quality to a DVD without ripping it and loosing a bit of quality.

You really have no clue do you? Have you used the converter? No. So either do that and then make wild claims about how it isn't true, or gtfo.

The reason it keeps the quality, but does it at half the size should be pretty fucking obvious. The resolution it plays the file at is so fucking small!!!! How big is the typical tv screen? Compare that to the ipod screen size.

It's not fucking magic.... The transcoding loses quality? Try it. The transcoding coverts the movie to a lower resolution to keep as much quality as possible. Sure you lose quality, but guess what, your not going to play the .mp4 file on your fucking widescreen tv now are you?

Resolution and picture quality are two different things. Something you seemed to not have picked up on in your first anti iPod rant.

How can it optimize for the display but not the resolution? Omg. lol

And the 40gb of movies so 20 movies obviously should have read 20gb of movies so 40 of them. Duh.

Never Google "SanDisk Sansa e26".

I recommend a Creative Zen.

Calm down there, you seem to be excited over nothing. As your aforementioned fanboyism would help indicate, I'm sorry you're under the impression that I insulted your precious iPod. In fact, nothing I said was anti-iPod.

That said, I'd have to give the encoding a few tries but being that the iPod's resolution is a quarter of the NTSC standard, you could probably get the file size down pretty nicely. I seemed to have forgotten we were in squint-o-vision.

You can not optimize a file for a particular resolution apart from clipping the picture or adding space to fit the aspect ratio. Neither of these help the picture quality, so you can not say the encoding optimizes the resolution to make it look better on an iPod.

You can, however, shift the colors in the image to make them appear more accurate when displayed on an iPod. A la, if you take two different makes of monitors you would have to calibrate them differently (probably) to get an accurate picture.

Can we keep the arguing to PM's or Xfire? Please?

Does anyone else have any other suggestions or should I have this closed?

You've seen pretty much the end of the list.

Also, I'm hardly being serious.

Nah, 8 is too small, get 16 at least.  You'd be amazed at how quickly it fills up with formatting/updates/applications/games and you have no room for music or movies

$300's a bit steep for the 16GB. I'll see what happens with the money/gift certificates I get for Christmas.
