It's a retort against the Mr.Cool's that have Evisu apparel logo's all over their Forum 'Personality' in some sort of blingish wealth-showoff spectacle. He-ey! Some of us can afford expensive fashionwear too! Isn't it great, just in case you needed to know how I budget for my clothing... here's a logo in my avatar.

I am partial to some Ralph Lauren Polo knitwear, but that's far from the point My last avatar wasn't creepy either, Aphex Twin is I'm pretty sure as far as social-cliches go, Ralph Lauren Polo stands for different things in England than it does in the USA. You have the entire preppiness / cheap polo shirts thing going on, we group it in the same sorta designer-pigeonhole as Lyle & Scott, Paul Smith etc. But I digress... this thread literally is becoming a fashionista parade.

Oh and err, yes, as Marine succintly pointed out... I'm also limp-wristed. I'll try to fix my tastes in fashion asap and conform to his manly standards of wearing bear-fur and brawn.

As opposed to a thread suggesting the release of a convicted thug and criminal, who has no good reason to be let out early?

Come on that's mean, I never call you names .

Awsm since I'm pretty sure we're both living under our parent's penny, let's pre-emptively kill off the 'My daddies' Bentley has a bigger engine than yours' argument and settle on the fact that, even if you are of a comfortable financial situation, you spend your money on garishly ugly 'designer' ghettowear- and you are far too ostentatious about it .

I still have no idea why the perfectly decent and appropriate recommendations was recieved in a hostile way... it was a damn good summary!

My take on it... It's a metaphorical tale about the battle between cut-throat capitalism and religion for the soul of America.

Day-Lewis is the oil prospector who represents Capitalism, his quest is an almost obsessive desire to accrue wealth and power in the form of 'black gold' deep down in the earth - the metaphor here being that he is digging into hell or into the darkness of the human soul. His character does not care how many people under him might die in this process and he even suggests he would stoop so low as to masquerade an orphan baby as his own son in order to convince the people of his family-oriented nature. The limits to which his cut-throat capitalism go are apparent near the end of the film when he disowns his son for attempting to start up his own oil business because he would now be his 'competition'.

Daniel the priest represents religion. He is just as morally corrupt as Day-Lewis as it is apparent to the viewer that he is a phony and is driven by wealth and greed every bit as much as Day-Lewis's character. The final scene, which many viewers complain is too abrupt and open-ended, is perfectly logical in my opinion. It symbolizes the very nature of cut-throat capitalism i.e. it is not enough to simply better your opponent, one must utterly destroy them... hence Day Lewis's final line in the movie after killing Daniel the priest: "I'm finished".

A great film on every level.

I liked this movie but it was really long. Interesting era, not many movies are made in that era so I recommend it.
