Anyone else catch this on BBC2 yesterday?

More greatness from Theroux, I must admit I love everything he does... great topics, controversial, thought-provoking and a great style.

This one isn't 'typical' Theroux in that it's quite dark - sad even, in places - but still has the same honest and bold technique that is so entertaining to watch.

For Brits/EU(?): iPlayer Link.

To anyone that can't get it via iPlayer, track it down on YouTube, it's definitely worth it!

Tasteful music selection by the audio editor as well, Boards of Canada

That was hilarious, so random! He was always off his face, even though he was meant to be the dealer- and kept a modest stock of cattle in the ghetto, haha. You could tell the guy was literally insane though; did you see the rims he put on that hideous car? Clearly mad.

Yep, makes 'rough' areas of England look like safe havens. Seems like a pretty hopeless situation as well, as Theroux highlighted at the end of the documentary: in an area with the complete breakdown of the family/community unit, and the widespread problem of drug-addiction and gang-activity, the act of simply policing and enforcing the law will not solve any problems in the long-term. The cop was pretty spot-on in recognising that the government on a local and national level had to do something pretty significant to get anywhere close to remedying the issue.

Wait, so summary of what it's about? How much Philly sucks? I love Louis Theroux documentaries though, so I'll definitely watch it later.

Philly is a very dodgy place to live, people walk around shooting other people, dealing and taking drugs and hating Cops. However, there is still a lot of good people still there.

Oh FYI, iPlayer only works in the UK. Much to my annoyance when I'm at home.

I was gonna watch it, but my parents wanted to watch Wallander instead, so I watched that, and it was quite good.

Will watch this either this afternoon or tomorrow though.

That sounds like either a spin off comedy from the movie Zoolander, OR, a program about professional Skateboarders

I am right or wrong?

Theroux needs to be more clued up though, he's like my mate. Always asking stupid questions he just got the basic answer to a few seconds ago, if you get me. I was like that too a few years ago.

For someone who's been around the world so much (Theroux) and experienced so many things, he still acts like he is some sort of guy that's... I dunno, not used to all of it. Sometimes I think it's just an act he's putting on.

Agreed, I mean he must have asked "Would you tell the police if you saw a shooting?" about twenty times and got the same responce every time. It was ridiculous. Still watched it though.

Yeah, he always comes off as super naive. I think that's partly just an act though, to try to push the interviewee and to get some more dialogue. I don't think he's as stupid as he plays.

It's definitely an act. Louis is a sly sunovahbitch. He's playing his interviewees every moment he gets.

It's his purposeful interviewing style, he plays the ignorant-naivety card in order to ask risky and confrontational questions.

If you watch Theroux's celebrity programs you can see this at work, and some guests are completely clued in to his act and shut him down, haha. Chris Eubanks is a good example.

That's a rather naive comment from yourself Skittles. Of course it's an act, but he does it so well, he's a brilliant interviewer.

I was quite shocked by just how bad these places are. Those cops have balls of steel to do that job.

tbh, they should put a great big wall around the entire area and just leave em to get on with it. No police, no nothing. Why waste our time on them, if they don't/can't want to help themselves.
I know its somewhat extreme (and would never happen), but like the cop said, someone else will fill his shoes in 30years time, same with the kids on the corners: whats going to change it?
Nothing, because they will just move elsewhere if you force them out. I wouldnt be surprised if most major cities didnt have similar problems, although perhaps not on the same scale and level of violence.

Watching it now.  Louis Theroux's documentaries are awesome.  This is the kind of programming that is worthy of our TV license payment, not some bullshit celebrity dancing facade.

Agree, even though I tend to watch almost all of Theroux's works on the Internet... pfft, licensing .

All his series are top-grade television, very interesting!

That was the most serious tone i've ever seen him take in one of these. I guess there is only so much you can't take seriously when you are wearing a bullet proof vest the entire time.

Thanks for posting Uzique, this was pretty good TV

I think the whole naive act works really well, it makes the sort of people he was interviewing in this vid much more likely to talk to him and answer his questions, clever tbh

Did it remind anyone of GTA:SA a bit lol

And all our governor (Rendell), does is tax the state and give it away to Philly, place is a shithole and throwing money at it is not gonna fix the problem.
