  • What connectors are these and how can I reformat this drive?

I really don't feel like buying adapters.  I told my friend I could reformat his laptop HD, figuring that it was a standard SATA connector.  It's a 2.5in HD.  I have no idea what the hell this is.  I think he must have taken the SATA part off, because it sure does look like a SATA connector except it's male.  Whatever...pics.

Why not just reformat it while it is in the laptop?

Better question is, why is the hard drive not in the laptop? Did you take it out, or he?

I've seen a number of laptop hard drives with 'inverse' connections, so it would be dependent on the laptop.

he did, not me.  he lives in another town and i really didn't feel like driving to his house so i just asked him to bring the HD to school.  i didn't know that some laptop manufacturers did that.  i guess i might have to go over after all.

Makes sense now. You could ask him to bring the laptop to school.

Otherwise, there's a bit of a problem. You said the connector on the hard drive was male. Well, that's how it should be. A standard SATA cable is female.

Like max said, it's hard to tell from the pictures, so unless we're missing something I'd try sticking a cable on it.

You could buy an external case for 2.5" HDDs but that requires something to be bought... Just a thought

If it is a sata drive regular sata cable should hook up to it.  Are you sure there isn't and adapter on the connector?  On my lappy (though it's pata) has an adapter on the drive that just pulls off that hooks between the HDD and mobo.

Q: What connectors are these and how can I reformat this drive?

A: I dunno. The pictures are too blurry.

I can't tell from the shit pictures, but I think its just IDE with the ZIF connector. Reef it off.

Edit: Zero insertion force

it's not IDE.  i know that much.  it's about SATA size, which leads me to think he just left the adapter on the laptop.  i'll try and have him bring it to school.

I assume it's a mini-ide connector. You will need a mini-ide to ide-adapter then.

it DOES say "Serial ATA Hard Drive" on the drive itself.

he's just missing the adapter then.

I think it needs a SATA connector

Yeah that. You drop the drive onto contacts instead of sliding it into a plug. It is an adaptor you can remove.

Isnt the whole point of laptops that they can easily be trasported? I still dont see the need for the hdd removal.

it'd be a little strange carrying a laptop around a high school/lockers don't have locks on them
