What can I build for $600-$800US?

Come January (unless another time is better in terms of releases and sales) I will finally buy a new computer.

I already have a decent case with 2 fans in it.

I need:

Power Supply Unit: I think something around 600W would do.
Hard Drive: ~600GB will do.
Graphics Card: HD4850 or 70? What do you all think?
RAM: 4GB for now.
CPU: at least 3.0Ghz dual core.
Sound Card: Something 5.1 capable.
Motherboard: I don't know what is good. I like ASUS.
Misc.: Thermal Paste, Another fan maybe. I already have a great heat-sink, but I don't know it's name nor do I know if it would fit on a new part.

Is that all? Which parts do you guys recommend?

a good 500w will be enough for any decent rig
4850 is still an awsm card, unless you wanna go really high end
P31 is a decent mobo, but you'd have to get 2x2gb stick ram for it

You mean just set up a thread with say builds for 4-6 different price brackets.. maybe update it monthly, would probably be helpful to some...
guess price depends alot on location though...

exactly. For those countries with higher prices, you can just move into a lower bracket.

The HD4870 will rip though anything (except crysis which works better on nvidia). The E5200 has an OC headroom of about 3.5-4GHz.

no problem. Those e5200 are simple to build. getting an aftermarket cooler would be helpful. Those stock coolers are terrible. For the 45nm duals the Freezer7Pro is an awesome buy

I have a heat sink still leftover from my last rig. I can describe with MS Paint. The fan reads Thermaltake.

I just remembered the fan. It's a thermaltake.
I don't have a camera available at the moment.

The fan is stamped AUG 05 2003. Perhaps It's time for a new one.
