sold my 260GTX today on ocuk forums got £170 for it, well actually i got £100 + an 8800GTX.

So thats one step towards my uber folding rig.

Dont play anything other than BF2 so felt 260 was a bit of a waste, plus you can use quadro drivers with an 8800gtx which will help with autocad etc later this year!!!!

Now i need to find out if my motherboard will run 4 8800gtx's (p45 gigabyte ds3) ?? and if not, what one to buy that can ??

2 PCI-E 2.0 x16 graphic interface with CrossFireX™ support for ultimate graphics performance
Only one Nvidia graphics card supported

but at the moment only two videocards can run in SLI at any given moment. This may change in the future, but for the moment current Forceware 81.98 drivers users are still limited to two videocards in SLI.

you can only run on video card period on that mobo.  there IS a mobo that runs 4 slots, but i think they are x8 each.  vanilla or 2.0, i don't know, and that's what makes the difference.  also, i forgot what brand it was.  only single card slots would fit in all 4 of those PCI-E slots anyway (e.g. 4 x 4850).

edit: are you looking at this motherboard, .Sup?

edit2: holy shit, i didn't know a 4 slot PCI-E mobo that could take dual slot cards existed! +1

No, you can run two nVidia for folding.

Stupid move tbh, the GTX260 rapes the 8800GTX for folding. If you just wanted extra money + a decent folding rig, you should have got an 8800GT or 8800GTS G92.

Crazed I don't see how you could run two nVidia cards on that mobo? Could you explain please?

Your best bet is to go with 3 cards. There are couple of mobos that support triple SLi.

Up until recently, F@H didn't use SLI. Therefore, all you needed was multiple PCI-e slots to run multiple cards. So therefore, it doesn't matter if you have an SLI or Crossfire motherboard, as long as you have multiple PCI-e slots, you can run multiple nVidia cards for F@H.

MSI 680i mobo with 4x double spaced PCI-e slots and tri-sli

Asus X38 with 4 PCI-e slots, not all double spaced and no SLI

Asus X48 with 4 PCI-e slots, not all double spaced and no SLI

of course there are loads of mobos based on 680i, 780i and 790i that have 3 PCI-e x16 slots and support tri sli

Didn't know that. But that would mean he will only be able to use both cards for folding. What about games?

For games he can only use one.

F@H uses each card individually, whereas SLI/Crossfire uses all cards in unison.

So, technically, he could run two games with full performance on both?

I tried running BF2 on one monitor and RA3 on the other. It worked ... sorta

MSI 680i mobo with 4x double spaced PCI-e slots and tri-sli
thats what i need, thanks, max.

Im going to be running F@H on 3 8800GTX's 24/7, and leaving one for gaming. Then i will run F@H on that aswell when im AFK.

so thats 4 8800GTX's with 786mb vram vs 1 260GTX with 896mb vram!

Considering i can buy two 8800GTX's for less than half the price of a 260GTX, its really quite cheap.

All i really need is a Corsair 1000w modular but it wont fit in my case!

And consider buying 8800GT's even cheaper than 8800GTX, when they get about 1000PPD more.

very true but you can only soft mod them for 3D design rendering, and I was offered a good deal on one!

I could even sell it for £110 ish and get an 8800GT, it depends how much ill need the 3D versatility!

Just make sure to not mix and match cards, it can lead to some funky results. Also you'll need a case with an extra PCI bracket on the bottom. You need to be able to fit a double width card in the bottom mobo slot. You can of course mod something

why don't you add me on xfire or MSN?
