What with climate change and the like, there is the underlining concern of, mass migration, and the ramifications that would go along with that.

However, trying, to steer as clear as possible, from the dooms day, end of the world stuff, my question to you is, would you be in support, of culling, a significant percentage of the world population, in the interests of preserving a more sustainable number?

Be it through conquest of what’s left, sitting idly by while hundreds of millions die, or even, letting us fight among ourselves until the population goes down.

Am just curious as to the state of mind you all have.  Regardless if you think it’s a completely impossible scenario, or, that I am hyping it up, if it did indeed happen, what would your thoughts on the matter be?

I think its a particular telling question in that, say, from a Christian perspective, I would ASSUME, the gut reaction would be, no we must help as many as we can.  But then, isn’t that a death sentence to those who may be able to survive?  From a secular position, do you value your fellow mans life as much as your own when it REALLY matters?

And, on a similar note, does morality exist when society breaks down and our instinct to survive takes hold?

Thoughts are much appreciated

I know ATG did a thread about this http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=106244, but, this is specifically a poll with opinions accompanying it hopefully.

Btw, those of you looking for the alusive:

It will never happen (and I will be dead in 2142) option.  I left it out in the interests of getting a better poll.  I really just want to see what side you sit on and your justification for that.

Thanks

Morality does not exist in the heart of man, no. Selfish Gene + Heart of Darkness,

I think it'll be a long while before any Malthusian scenarios take place, 2142 is quite prematurely early. I'm all for mass culling though, preferably as soon as possible. Isn't that what the Americans invented AIDS for?

I say invite them into the country then force them into slave labor while using them as an alterative energy and food source.

Oh and don't forget the wild porn the good looking ones would be forced to make.

Not 'innocent', inferior.

Let's face it, it's going to get to that point one day; a definite inevitability.

Would have suggested that but this scenario is set firmly in 2142... ergo: impossible.

We have the technology to start Terraforming now, but not nearly enough funds.

It's definitely possible...we'd just bankrupt the world.

We have the technology to hypothetically start terraforming yes... but there's no real guarantee it would 'work', let alone create a habitable environment suitable for mass-population. Personally I'm gonna hold my breath on the astrological HZ / Total Recall fantasies.

Of course there's no guarantee it would work. Which is why my original comment was, for the most part, facetious.

I do believe that's the ultimate solution to overpopulation, though. Colonizing other planets.

I don't really see any other way (in an ethical way, that is) we could possibly solve overpopulation.

Ah, so their crime is inferiority.  Where have I heard that before ... hmm ...

I don't really see a way to cart thousands, if not millions, of people to another planetary body outside our unsuitable solar system.

So they're both 'unethical' really, just in different forms of directness: actively moderate the population of the Earth through human intervention, or select an exclusive few whilst the rest die off slowly and painfully anyway.

My answer is...  no...

However, I don't think we'll really have to worry about whether or not this will happen, because when resources become scarce, wars tend to happen.  WW3 may end up reducing our population down to something a lot lower than the maximum sustainable population.

Think Fallout 3....
