First of all, it's Ubuntu.  Secondly, what is your primary reason for Linux?  If you don't do much else then gaming, word processing/surfing the Internet, and assorted basic tasks then Linux isn't really necessarily.

The only real reason I would install Linux on a machine would be to turn it into a storage/game server.

I'm considering putting Linux on my lappy; It can do just those things, word processing and surfing the internet. Gaming is a bit of a hassle, but it works. Hell, even my class of inbred islanders managed to set up Ubuntu in school.

So, if all he does is surfing the Internet and word processing, Ubuntu is really nice.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

To delete it later, just boot to Windows and format the partition from within Windows.

This is the typical example of a person that hasn't give it a real try.

For the OP, you have to partition your HD but that could corrupt some stored data in there (not necessarily Windows system files but mp3, movies, pr0n, etc.). If you are not convinced you should try the live cd of Ubuntu. For that, just put the CD, reset your computer, change your BIOS settings to read first the CD/DVD drive and presto, you'll use a live session of Ubuntu without even installing it.

Ubuntu is an operating system. It's not just the command line interface your thinking of using for a storage/game server.

I would use the free virtual machine player...  vmware player download from http://www.vmware.com/
and then use the ubuntu 8.04 appliance(it's Ubuntu 8.04 Operating System that runs virtually on your windows machine)  It comes with Firefox installed...  http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/1224
You don't need to do anything to your windows xp... no partitioning at all...
Then if you mess up the files in Ubuntu or just want to start over... you can delete the Ubuntu 8.04 folder and then unzip a new copy of 8.04 and start again...

You need to make one partition for the root (about 10gb minimum) and another for the swap file (I'd do 1gb).

Burn the correct version of ubuntu that you want from their site onto a black disc. Boot from the disk, follow the steps through.

When you get to the partition bit you assign the root partition to root (in one of the drop down boxes) and for the swap file just type "/" without the quotes in the mount box.

Then it just finish installing.

For the dual boot download 'EasyBCD' and add another bootloader entry (which doesn't need explaining when you see how easy the program is to use).

EasyBCD is for Vista. You'll have to tell the GRUB loader to see XP, because XP cannot see linux. It explains how to do everything in the guide I posted above.

In response to most posters:

I only said what I said not to be closed minded or downing Linux, it's just that I've known too many people who have installed Ubuntu, and then switched back to XP because they didn't like it, it wouldn't work correctly, etc.  Of course you could always troubleshoot your problem, run WINE to emulate Windows programs, but why go through the trouble?  For a small performance boost and larger e-penis?  ("I run Linux.")
[/i]

It's mainly personal preference.  I've used Ubuntu and other versions of Linux before, it takes some time getting use to it.   I prefer Windows, mainly because it does what I need done.

GL to the OP if he installs Ubuntu, last install I saw a person do, he couldn't get his network card working, but he was on a school-loaned Dell.

i have both Ubuntu 8.10 and Vista HP 64 bit on my computer, i like ubuntu, dual boot on your computer.

the easiest way to dual boot is to download a application called "wubi"

http://wubi-installer.org/

install ubuntu with this app, you don't need to download Ubuntu if you have this app

Run it from a CD first and if you like it install it.

Why would you want to? GRUB does a much better job of it.

It works? What else does it need to do?

this.

Also as for removing it, simply formatting the partition will not work, as you will no longer have a bootloader. After you have deleted it, you will need to get an XP install disk and use the "repair" option on your XP install to fix the bootloader. However, this does mean you have to reinstall all the windows updates you have, which may be a pain if you're on a slow connection.

But it doesn't work, that's the whole reason you use GRUB.

Ok so doing so will NOT harm my windows files?

Yes, that's with Vista. With XP, you need to use GRUB.

Don't use the repair, just get to the recovery console and type fixboot and fixmbr. Should be good to go.
