Want to upgrade my AMD 4200 socket AM2 processor to something as fast as possible on that socket, something like this sort of price range and spec.

Like this

But Gigabyte says it doesn't support it on my present motherboard.

http://www.giga-byte.com/Support/Mother … uctID=2281

Anyone suggest a close alternative and a site I can get it from as cheap as possible, or a way to make it work that isn't dodgy, bearing in mind i am in UK.

I think that CPU should work on your mobo. If not, BIOS update could fix it. Best to Google that CPU+your mobo.

the list says it supports 6000+ with F8 bios or newer. The energy efficient 6000+ is supported with F13 or newer BIOS.

update the BIOS to latest version found on the gigabyte site and buy an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ AM2. That is the fastest your board can handle.

There are two types of 6000x2 + I believe, the 85 watt and the 125 watt. The 125 watt should be able to work on your motherboard, the 85 watt however, I don't know. PC Geeks correct me if I'm wrong

OK, i spoke to a guy in a local PC shop, and he said he doesn't see any reason why the 6000 shouldn't work if the 6400 is supported, as long as they are both x64 Athlon and socket AM2. He also said that my BIOS should be fine how it is, unless i'm trying to overclock my new CPU, which i won't be.
Does this sound feasible, or was he winging it?
If he is right i will go for the 6000+ 3.1GHz from Overclockers, i know they are reliable and it is a decent price.

Just reflash the bios and then put in the CPU. Even if it might work on the old bios, you might run into some funky, hard to diagnose problems
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
