Help with installing a new optical drive...

ok, so i went and got fallout yesterday, and my dvd drive wont read it.

a few months ago it stopped reading blank dvds, and i updated firmware/drivers. that didnt work....

it DOES read almost all of my dvd games...it has a bit of a hard time with cod4 sometimes, but it will still work.

it just WONT read blank dvds or fallout.

SO, im about to go get a new drive...some LG thats on sale at circuit city.

what is the procedure as far as taking the old one out and and putting the new one in.
do i need to uninstall drivers?

im pretty sure i see how to do the hardware, im just worried about the software side of it.

i wouldn't worry about software. most drives are pretty standard and don't need their own specific firmware (unless it's lightscribe or something similar). you can just uninstall whatever came with the old drive and install whatever is on the new drive's CD to be sure.

software wise you don't need to do anything. Just disconnect the old drive, unscrew, get new drive and connect

Just make sure you get the same type (IDE or SATA) or have a spare port and cable

The power input only goes in one way and the SATA/IDE cable should be obvious where it plugs into. Very easy.

how do i tell what i have, and what i need?

both are IDE. you're fine.

both are IDE so you can just swap the drives without worrying about the cables
