How did you learn about Computers?

Since I joined this forum and from looking through the Tech section over the years, I see lots of computer smart people, I've always wondered where the people learned about computers, whether it's from college or particular computer courses or just through trial and error of using a computer for some amount of time.

So, that's the question I wanted to ask you all now, where did you all learn? This is directed to anyone that has a certain know-how with a computer.

Also, from myself, I think the Hardware side of things is alot more fun, which do you all like better? Software or Hardware?

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

My first computer was an 8088 AT&T with a monochrome monitor. I learned to type using Lotus123, learned to swap stuff out a few years later, learned to use specific programs a few years later than that by attending short classes.

From my friends,alot of building our own computers and lan gaming back in the days of quake 1.

Then work broadend(sp) my knowledge(i work in it support) i would of liked to of done courses but not as easy when in full time work its alot harder.

i first built a computer with my uncle (although he hadn't built a computer in a long time, and gave me the green light to buy a bunch of slightly outdated stuff). then after that it was basically all the internet with some bf2s here and there. lots of hands on experience with building computers for friends and stuff. i think i've built over 10 now.

edit: oh and maximum pc helped a little. pc gamer's hardware section each month is absolute shit. for entry level systems they have a 8600GT, then for mid level they skip up to a 4870X2. what the fuck?

I'm EE ... plus I worked for IBM when the first PC's were coming out, and built my own.

You have to get your hands inside the things and tinker in order to learn.

It is important to learn theory to go with hands on experience though. Knowing at least the basics of how something works is invaluable to troubleshooting.

I had been playing with computers since the early 90s, but I didn't know much about them until a few years ago. I learned a lot from 2 of my friends and a lot from people on this site.

Trial and error. I hate asking for help (or so am told), so, have had to deal with problems solo, and sort of learned from there. Know much more about hardware than I do software admitedly.

Always had them at home. My dad's been a System Administrator for years so I picked up some from him, and I've just finished my Bachelor of Information Technology at University so picked up my programming skills, etc from there.

I'd like better computer science skills atm, rather than the IT based side.
