What is the point of prison?  Is it to punish?  To rehabilitate?  Satisfy the victims?  Keep politicians in power?

Are we treating our prisoners too 'soft'?  Are our prisons deterrents to crime?  Are they enough of a deterrent?

Anyone here actually been in a prison and able to give us a more intimate opinion?

Even if you ignore the fact that prison means giving up your freedom, its not something that most would consider fun.

my brother inlaw has been in jail since 1986... i don't think fun would be a word he would use to describe his stay...lol...
he has access to tv( i don't think cable)  he has no internet access or even use of computers i believe... he can't receive any books or food or gifts... he gets out the end of 09...   He stays to himself and just lifts weights and boxes... he has taken classes on learning a trade and is taking classes on dealing with being back in society... we will help him also... we have a close nit family...

23 years? What was it for if you don't mind me asking.

Also, dam. A lot has changed over 23 years, good luck on teaching him all that has happened.

The point of prison is to:
Punish
Protect the public
Rehabilitate

Also to make people realise the error of their ways, hence no parole if you don't accept what you did was wrong, or accept you did what you were convicted of - which is a bugger if you were wrongly convicted.

The balance is wrong these days

oUR PRISONS ARE MUCH SOFTER. I like the way in the US pedos and rapists are exposed to the general prison population to hopefully receive some of their own medicine. In the UK they are segregated and protected.

Isn't their some hellhole prison in tents in the desert in Texas?

In Iceland murdering and raping a child would get you 24 years.

Yep, 24 years is the highest possible sentence here. It's pathetic.

We have maximum security prison here, where inmates can do work for money, watch TV or read books or something, then there is minimum security prison, which is basically a Hotel where you can't leave.

Prisons need to do more to rehabilitate. The way they are now, they make the criminals meaner and tougher. Also being sent to prison makes it much more difficult to get a job after release, and without a job most people will go back to crime.

depends

For some stuff, there really doesn't need to be prison time (e.g. possession of pot in small quantities). For other stuff (murder, rape, torture etc) there should be nothing less than a life sentence (as in, the life of the person incarcerated... not 25 fucking years) with zero parole.

Hurri, imagine going to jail in 1983 and being released today, with little to no hope of ever getting a job. Chances are the only support you'd have is your family.

Why is rape and torture in the same category as murder?

I agree with both these statements. From what I've seen from documentaries and shit, prisons are pretty fucking crazy. At the same time though, some people in there deserve that shit. Providing you're actually guilty (which is where I find the problem) I want all the prisoners stuck together so if you raped a child, you're probably going to get raped. The problem is is that the judicial system is not all knowing and occasionally fucks up. The idea of some dude being wrongly sent to jail for child molestation and gets raped scares the crap out of me.

Because they should be. It's not like a robbery where you lose your stuff and have to but it again. Victims of rape and torture are fucked up for the rest of their lives.

A good friend of mine got falsely accused of oral copulation with a minor, his tenth month old daughter.
4 years in prison with a constant threat of getting killed. I believe he was innocent, and he will never be the same.

Depends on what i went to jail for. If it was for speeding, or for pirating a song... yes that's in excess.

If it's for kidnapping, torturing, raping, and murdering a person... then 25 years is way too soft.

my favorite part is the plea of "he obviously didn't understand the gravity of what he did." if so, then how the fuck is he going to understand anything taught in a rehabilitation thing?

Prison is the wrong approach to criminal activity. There are some 2 million Americans in prison. Why? Every county should have a council of elders to decide the fate of wrong doers.

25 years in jail will destroy a person's life quite effectively. As would being convicted of rape/murder/torture. They would face a changed society without any support and very little hope of getting a job.

Random violence from fellow prisoners is not a punishment society should impose IMO.
