!!! First of all to Razer fanboys: my question is simple. No i wont buy Deathadder, Destructor etc!

OK. I want to buy Logitech G9 and this - http://www.steelseries.com/int/products/surfaces/i-2 surface. Will Logitech G9 work on glass? The question isnt as ridiculous as it may seem, cause G5/7 dont work on glass at all, so i wanna know. Thx

If the G5/G7 doesn't and they both use optical bottom trackers, I'm guessing the G9 won't work either.

The problem is that the mice work by shining a light on the surface, then analyzing the reflection that comes back(It's quite liteterally a very low resolution camera)

On glass, the light just shines straight through, so no, it won't work.

Pay $5 for a mouse pad or take a piece of paper from your printer. It'll work then.

But I think the G series are all laser mice, not optical mice ...

I just stuck my G9 on the side of my PC case (acrylic window) to see if it'd work. It kinda works, but it's real screwy. Just grab a cheap mousepad.

It will work perfectly. I have a Logitech laser mouse and a glass mouse surface.

IceMat and SteelSeries are now the same company, IIRC.

Same technique, laser is only a bit more accurate and less kinky about the surface.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Yea, I did some quick checks before I spoke out of my ass and a laser will work on almost any solid surface. I think clear glass is a hit or miss. Maybe if your mouse works on your clear glass table, you probably have a shitty quality glass top? IDK.

It will work. Just grabbed my bros icemat something or other (its glass) and my G9 works fine.

supposedly laser mice are supposed to work on glass surfaces, although i don't think they're supposed to be the thick on-top-of-the-table glass.  i think they mean the type of glass liq has on his icemat.  i would just buy a mousepad.

Don't spend that much money on a mousepad.

I would have thought that mice project light like this:

So there will always be a reflection, even off of a see-through sheet of glass.

There is only a reflection off the actual glass if the incident angle is more than the critical angle.

or at least a significant one

it might be refracted in some weird way though.  your mousepad is thin,  so there should be less refraction + there's a dark surface beneath the glass that absorbs more light.  hmm...i'm intrigued though, i should go try it out firsthand.

Referring to laser mice that are much more sensitive, and it wasn't exactly serious. But my logic was like this: if a laser mouse can "see" in higher detail than an optical, and you are using it on a piece of glass with nothing underneath the glass for the laser to "see", then you must have poor quality glass because then the laser picks up the imperfections in your glass.

I just took my G9 and put it on the window.  Hardly any movement (a couple of pixels), very jerky, so you'll need some backing behind the glass still.

Great pads...
I have a 1030 as well though I've grown to feel it's too small and it's worn out, actually. I guess years of FPSs can do that but it's served me well the whole time. In all honesty, if I didn't really want a bigger pad I'd have no problems trucking on with the 1030.

You have a good point but to say "if it works you must have shit glass" is a bid misleading in the diction department.
