So my mother bought me a 500 GB external maxtor hard drive. Lately I've actually started to care about the fact that it's been beeping. Or at least I'm pretty sure that's what's beeping since obviously this wasn't going on before I plugged it in. Anyway, I opened up Event Viewer (System) and since 12-04 There's been a very long series of warnings stating "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation."
These are shown appearing since 11-30, the only difference is it looks like everyday the description changes, for example on 11-30 "\Device\Harddisk2\D during..."
It beeps at least once every hour, whatever's beeping...maybe this is something concerning?

It wouldn't surprise me if it was stuffed, I've had 3 Mator drives and they all failed within 2 years.

I would definately be backing up the data if you want to keep it, even if the beeping isn't a problem.

Try reformat it, and see if that helps.

Whadda you mean by stuffed?
Eh...I could care less if it crapped out on me. Haven't put much on it yet except for some torrented movies, music, and counter strike skins.

stuffed = broken

Is it USB? Does it have an external power connection, or get power from the USB port?

Are you on XP?

Hmm, I thought it might be a power problem with the UBS hub, but if it's got it's own power it should be fine.

Since when do hard drives beep?  Maybe the hard drive is causing the internal speaker to beep but I don't see how the hard drive itself can make a digital-sounding "beep" noise.

So you're saying it's sending out beeps like in post?

What exactly do these 'beeps' sound like, noob?

I am now formatting it...only thing that came with it was some shitty backup software that would backup only My Documents, My Pictures and etc. Not only wouldn't it do a full disk image/backup but you couldn't even select folders you wanted to backup.

Single beeps that happen to go off at least every hour. But I haven't heard one since I reformatted started reformatting it.

Not 'squeaks', rather than 'beeps'?

Nah...let's just say I'd have responded to it MUCH quicker if it did that.

More like boops. Haha. Onomatopoeias are fun.

Can you get a recording of it?

I've a feeling it may be sticking.

Sticking?
Well you see it happens at random times, so I could try but, uh..here's the..system..event viewer. These I assume are when the beeps are going off because I opened it once immediately after it beeped and a new "Warning" had appeared right there.
8:44
8:06
7:40
7:24
Also on the more important note, obviously 8:44 was the last time it beeped, now being 9:56PM and it is currently reformatting in cmd.exe
But if the problem persists I will do, captain.

Quantum > Maxtor

YAAAY! I can go by old information too!

Maxtor is now a brand name, that's a Seagate inside that thing.

What if your drive goes "oooooreeeehh!" when it starts? Also my computer stops dead and the drive light stays on, then after about 5 minutes its fine again. I think its time for it to go the the big RMA dept. in the sky.
