I want to listen to my MP3 player (Creative Zen) through my car speakers. Don't really know what I need to get. I have the factory installed AM/FM radio/cd player that originally came with the car.

Thanks for any help.

you can either:
1) get a shop to install a 3.5mm jack for you
or
2) use a FM transmitter

Does it have a cassette slot?

You could get one of these

Not sure why all the bad reviews, mine has worked great for over a year.

No cassette slot. Guess I'll start looking around for a FM Transmitter. Thanks.

I have a Griffin iTrip FM Transmitter, and although it is the best of it's kind, the sound quality is still fairly bad and tuning it is a pain in the anus.

Just buy one that plugs into the cigarette lighter, better sound quality and you dont have to fuck about with tuning.

Or you could buy the cassette tape that has a 3.5mm cable to plug into the MP3 player.

Or you could get a shop to install a USB hub/3.5mm socket.

Or you could buy a new stereo that has a HDD.

There are some others but I feel like i'm rambling.

I bought a new stereo for my car and it has an AUX socket for MP3 players.  I don't know the exact model but it was a Sony and it only cost about $100.  Works great with my Zune.

FM transmitters and the cassette tape things have pretty crappy audio quality.  You really want something that plugs directly into the head unit.

As said, an FM transmitter is the easiest way, personally I don't like the loss of audio quality they suffer from, depends what speakers you have as to whether you'd notice it. If they're the standard ones that came with the car I doubt it'd make any difference. if you have good speakers installed I'd go for a new head unit, most of Sony's range has standard jack inputs for mp3 players and they don't cost a lot.

They are just standard JBL car speakers, not really into speakers and stuff to get  the best quality sound. I'll just go with the FM transmitter.

Could you give me an example of one of these so I know what to look for?

I just want to say that I've been using cassette adapters for many years now, and they have great quality. I haven't had any problems (although I have had to replace one because it's getting worn down and sometimes doesn't output in both speakers [and trust me, it's the cassette head and not the jack connection to my source]).

You're really better off finding a stereo with a jack, by way of getting someone to install it for you, or replacing your current one. Plus you could just open it up and get one of those RCA adapters (I think that's what they are?) that take the red/white and change it to headphones and wire that out of the little box that holds the stereo.

Just install a new stereo. Get better quality and functionality. Set one up with built-in satellite radio and you're even that much better off.

i have to agree, for the extra cash outlay you can get better quality audio, more functionality and shiney lights, obviously the shiney lights are the most important but the DAB radio / SD Card reader / USB stick reader / mp3 input / bluetooth mobile phone connection are nice bonuses (yes you can get this kinda stuff on pretty standard head units, you don't have to buy something expensive).

Fitting it isn't hard either, should either plug straight in using the current connectors, or buy some ISO converters for your modle of car, cost about £5.

EDIT: You may need a fascia too if your stereo is moulded to fit your dash board.

Look over at Crutchfield.com for stereos that are guaranteed to fit your model. Really nice site and you can buy the conversion kits (many come with the kits) and let me tell you, those kits make installing it a BREEZE.

While you're at it, if you got the coin to spend and you do a lot of road trips, you could even get one with a built-in DVD player and LCD screen. Then you'd be balling. From there you could buy an AV switcher and hook up your PMP, a computer (like a Mac Mini or an EEE Box) and whatever else you can think of. Now THAT is ballin.
