I got a TurboTax trial CD in the mail and I got to thinking, "Just when the hell do I file my tax return?"

I went to the TurboTax site and I'm just gonna use the free version since I don't own a house or any shit. But I don't think I saw anything regarding when to file.

I did some Wiki searching and I read something about a W-2 form. Is my employer supposed to give me some form by the end of the year?

When are tax returns due?

Is doing taxes really such a chore over there?

1. Log in to the tax thingy website.
2. See if the info there matches your paychecks.
3. Click finish.

Done in 10-20 minutes.

Yep due on April 15th and W-2's have to be mailed out to you by Jan. 31st.  Best to file as soon as you get your w-2's (if you get a refund) as the sooner you file the quicker it will be processed.

I've never done them before. All I know is the government likes to take more than I owe, and if I call them out on it by filing these returns I get some money.

I didn't have to pay taxes, because my income was less than $15K that year (only work during summer)

Nope, we pay taxes no matter what AFAIK. If they could enforce it without costing much, they'd tax little kids running lemonade stands.

@Jaymz, why the hell is tax day such a big deal then? You're given practically two months to fill these things out. Sure, procrastination... I suffer from it... but not when there's MONEY at stake.

And if I remember correctly, when I got this job the manager said they'd do auto-taxation so that their magical tax gnomes would tax the highest plausible amount from my paycheck. Then, once it's tax filing time, I can get my return.

No wonder, your taxes are like waaay low, what's it over there, under 20%? It's 36% here IIRC.

Well a lot of people owe the gov't money so they wait til the last minute to file,  and some just procrastinate.  I used to be a procrastinator about taxes until I got married and have a dependent, which with my income means big returns (earned income credit is awesome).

I claimed them on the second day of January. Got myself a $5,000 return check by mid May.
Being married isn't always bad. heh heh.

You don't need turbo tax most likely.  As someone said, you probably will file a 1040EZ, which basically consists of putting in numbers from your W2.  If you are eligible I recommend filing online because the turnaround time for your return (if you are eligible for one) is a lot faster.

People wait until the last minute because no one likes giving money to the govt.

Jan 1st, if youve got all your paperwork

but it usually takes 2-3 weeks for companies to mail it to you, I wait for, school loans, house mortgager, and the companies i have worked for to send me my shit before i file. I like to get it done early because I always get money back

Alright, thanks for the info guys. I guess it'll be a 1040EZ, since it's a freakin' minimum wage weekend job. I'll try and see if I can get the W-2 ASAP.

@Ken yes but don't people like getting money?

What's the minimum wage over there?

I'm kinda surprised tbh, not even Socialist Norway has minimum wage (unless like 2 thirds of the employees are paying members of a labour union).

People do, but not everyone gets money (dun dun dun!).  It really comes down to how/what you claim and how much information you need to provide.  For someone like you with a part-time job and no dependants/no other income you only need to provide minimal info.  For someone with a business, assets, stocks and a family there is much more information to provide.

I think the federal minimum is $5.55. In Maryland it's $6.55. In DC it's $7.55. I think in one state it's like $8.90. All per hour.

When I did mine for my summer job, it took less than 10 minutes, so I wouldn't sweat it.

We have the highest state minimum wage at $8.07 but in the City of San Francisco it's over $9.30!
