I downloaded .sup's file and patched it to my computer, now my computer wont boot properly. I can boot in safe mode (right now) but when i let it try to start normally it will get to a certain black screen after the XP start up screen and there will be a BSOD and it will restart and restart and restart. It loops restarts and I can't find the problem. I tried deleting the file that the patch created but it didn't help

suggestions?

Run system restore and restore it to a date before you made the install

Or he just can pop in his XP disc and do a repair without losing information.

What info would he loose exactly? Mutant do you have Windows set on its own partition?

reinstalling windows/repairing windows will not make him lose any data. the only thing that gets affected is his windows folder... correct me if im wrong.. but ive done numerous windows repairs/reinstall and havent lost any data.

doesnt even need to be set in its own partition.. just boot up with xp disc.. install windows.. and for gods sake dont choose format.. just reinstall over the top.. and it will replace all the files that have been modified.. and your problem should be fixed

I know it doesn't have to have its own partition. Was asking cos its always good to backup your data to a second partition before running any kind of OS restore.

Edit: and what do you mean reinstall over the top? If he chooses to reinstall he should format his partition and not just install another OS on the same partition as you cannot reinstall over an existing copy without formatting and having only 1 install. Running recovery console is an option too but system restore is so easy and takes only 5 minutes to do.

windows repair is the way to go... or even a system restore as .sup said.

reinstalling windows over the existing install, while possible, is not ideal.  all of the programs will need to be reinstalled as well, and ultimately leads to a lot of confusion and clutter on the hard drive.

There's a patcher for sp3 here.
If you have tried the older patch for sp3 make sure the uxtheme.dll at windows/system32 is version 5512.** Otherwise you'll screw your windows up and can't boot it anymore. Happened to me, but luckily could start in safe  mode and unpatch it.

EDIT: Oh, and the theme is Inspirat SE
How can I know what version that .dll is? And where can I get that version?

Btw I downloaded this patcher long time ago and it didn't work. probably cos of that .dll. It didn't screw my Xp install It was just really hard to reset to XP theme.
Go to windows/system32 and find the uxtheme.dll. Right click and choose properties, select version tab and it's the first bit of text there is.
It should be 5512 if you have sp3 installed and haven't tried patching it with older patches.

this is not true.. as i haven't run into this problem.
when you have windows already installed and you boot up with your xp disk in. you go into xp install. when it asks you where you want to install.. you select your drive with windows already on it.. it will then patch over your existing copy of windows xp, replacing fiels that have been modified with the originals.  this in no way affects your program files folder and installs.

Okay Im back. I don't have SP3 installed so I don't know if that properties thing will work

So you're telling me pop in my xp disc and reinstall? Are you positive that will not wipe my data?

EDIT: I did the properties deal and it says my version is 6.0.2900.2180

and .sup I figure I could back up my windows data on my second drive, if I knew how

repairing will not wipe data.  what repairing does only affects the windows core files (files used to run windows itself).  i don't know what others said (and i cba to check) so if you haven't done that already that's the first thing you should do.  actually the first thing you should have done was call me.
