Ok, so I have not been the biggest Play Station fan. I won a PS2 at work and a $100 giftcard and traded in the console and used it to buy a new ipod. But I just got a high def TV a few weeks ago and honestly only noticed minimal improvement from my standard TV to my HDTV for the XBox 360 (besides the full screen to wide screen and 20" to 40"). Well I want to start getting Blu Ray instead of DVDs and I've wanted to go through the Metal Gear Solid story line, but other then that one series of games I don't have much interest in PS3 games.

Is it worth it to get a PS3 at $399 for the basic package, BluRay and maybe a handful or games, or a regular BluRay at $215 and no games?
Does the PS3 actually have any good games lined up to come out? Is LBP all that fun, or was it more hype than anything?
Since it is BluRay do the games take full advantage of the HDTV?
Would it be more worth my while to wait a year and see if the price drops more?

Not much can match the quality of a Blu Ray and a 1080 HDTV.

The Blu Ray player in the PS3 is good bang for buck considering you get a good quality Blu Ray and a gaming console with a variety of other functions and most of the big titles are available for PS3. Going online with PS3 is free of charge unlike the XBox360.

So if you are into playing games and watching high definition movies the PS3 is a good buy and yes it takes full advantage of your HDTV.

LBP i wouldn't know about, ask Sergeriver ...

LBP is fun, but takes a while to actually create stuff.  If you have time on your hands, go for it.

But if you want Blu-Ray, go with the PS3...well worth it in the long run.

The MGS series is great. Also check out the Ratchet & Clank series, and also the Resistance: Fall of Man series (made by same people as R&C).

Heck, with the backwards compatibility, you might as well get a bunch of amazing PS2 and even a few PS1 games that you've missed out on! It'll be especially worth it since they'll be dirt cheap. (I still my PS2 games to this very day; never get sick of them)

Are you using an HDMI cable with the xbox360? I don't think, or at least haven't heard, that PS3 looks too much more amazing then 360 if they are both using HDMI...  Sure PS3 discs are blueray, and xbox is DVD but with a game all the graphics are just stored as data and the differences in formats really just breaks down to storage size as far as I know...

That said I think the PS3 really has a lot to offer as a console. Built in bluetooth, free online play, blueray player, built in wireless networking, and a lot of nice standarization, I.E. the wireless controllers recharge with a regular usb-> mini usb cable, you can use any blutooth headset for a mic, I belive same goes for USB headsets, hard drive is a standard 2.5in drive and easily user replaceable with out voiding warranty, standard bluetooth keyboards and mice can be used for games that allow it, for sending messages or for the internet browser, it is built to allow you to install another OS on it such as linux...

I would basically ask my self if owning a PS3 is worth $185... Your spending the $215 anyways so is a new console worth the difference?
also remember that unfortunately in general PS3 is not reverse compatible so where you say
I've wanted to go through the Metal Gear Solid story line
remember that you won't be able to play the older ones with out a PS2 (or doing some research and finding the ones that ARE backwards compatible...)

I know that certain older PS3s are fully backwards compatible because they have the hardware for doing so and don't need to emulate anything, but aren't the newer models capable of playing PS1/2 games as well? (Even if it is software-based vs. hardware-based). I was under the impression that more often than not, older PS games still worked on the PS3. You say it as if the PS3 is not backwards capable at all. (Please correct me if I'm wrong; I haven't yet had the chance to experiment with the different PS3s and different games)

Yeah, i don't think about my PS1 games much... I have tried Tony Hawk Pro skater for PS1, MGS 1 for PS1 and one of the final fantasy games for PS1, all worked so I assume all PS1 games will be playable.

IIRC there was a model(s) that played PS2 games with hardware, and one possibly one that used software only (I think I remember this one would only play some ps2 games)...

It is my understanding that the general PS3 will not play any PS2 games though, and mine definitely wont.

So:
My basic 40gig will play PS1 only, as I believe is the case with most PS3's in general
Some will play PS2 games as well, with some of those possibly being software driven only and not being compatible with the full library...

If backwards compatibility is a major selling point to you, I encourage you to do a lot more research on the subject. I don't play many older PS games, and I still have a PS2 if I want to, so it wasn't that important to me and I didn't look into it much.

Yeah, it's an issue that has me on the fence. The older 60 GB PS3's are the ones that have the hardware to play PS2 games, so I'm looking for those. Fortunately they're all around $400, some more, some less. The thing for me is whether I should spend the same price as a new PS3 for a used system. If I'm going to spend that much money, I sure as hell want it to be brand new, plus I still have my PS2 and it works fine. But then again, if I'm going to spend this much money, I might as well spend a little more to get that brand new 60 GB, as well as being able to have one system that'll do it all.
I'm leaning towards the latter since, after all, the PS3 is supposed to be the media center hub of the living room, and I plan on upgrading the HDD, putting all my music and a bunch of movies on it, linking it up with my PC, linking it up with my PSP; so at this point it'd be such a waste to have this highly capable system, and then have to switch my inputs and dust off the old controllers any time I feel like playing a PS2 game.

Another thing I'm wondering, and something I'll look into if need be, is if Sony has added any hardware upgrades to these newer models of PS3's. They did it with the PS2 and PSP, so it wouldn't surprise me. So I've gotta find out if those hardware differences (if any) are significant enough to warrant a purchase of a newer PS3 at the cost of losing compatibility.

Geez, so much to look into for just a console. I almost feel like I'm building myself a new PC here...

If you're in the market for a Blu-Ray player, the PS3's definitely your best bet. You'll get the most bang for your buck, and it's basically like getting a gaming console for $200 when you think about it.

LBP is pretty good, but it's certainly nowhere near as good as most critics put it as. The level creator is very vast, but the SP can be extremely frustrating. Not to mention that in co-op it lags severely.

I'd give it an 8.5, personally.

Poseidon, I think something is wrong in your setup somewhere... PS3, internet provider, the local PS servers you connect to, SOMETHING.

Everything with PS3 seems to lag for you, and you are one of the few I have heard complain about it. My internet fluctuates wildly in its quality, but my PS3 almost always has less lag then computer games I play online.

PS3 games can have more content because of the Blu-Ray's larger capactiy can't they?

My PS3's been great so far , no issues at all.

btw, I've yet to try with mine, anyone know if the PS3 can paly DVD movies as well as Blu-Ray?

Had a PS2, loved it to bits (gold on every race+lic+challenge etc on GT4, 100% on GTA:VC&SA etc etc) but after using a xbox controller, i just cant go back!

Then why is my PC connection fine, my XBL connection fine and every other game I play on PSN fine?

It's LBP. Heggs had the same problem (I was playing with him...and he's in NY as well), and so have many others.

I dunno man, and like I said perhaps it has to do with the area/servers in the area/what you are connecting to.

All I know is you seem to have it with every game, and while I don't have LBP my PS3's connection is great.

The controllers is really a personal thing though, I am the exact opposite. I have an xbox360 controller I use with emulators and games like GTA:SA and I really don't like it. I think the PS3 controller is much better...

I've had my PS3 for about 4 months now and I love it. The free online is great, I had a couple problems when I first got it, maybe 2-3 days but then never had another issue with it. I hardly ever play games online, so if I had to pay, I wouldn't, but the fact that it's free gives me that great option to do so when I want to. The games are great too, the only 360 exclusive that I'm interested in is GoW2, the list of PS3 exlcusives is a lot longer for me. I don't get what people are talking about with 360 exclusives, there's not that many great exclusives for it imo.

If you really want a blu-ray player, then definately get the PS3. Look at it this way, if you were willing to spend $200+ on a decent blu ray player, would you get a Playstation 3 for less than $200? IMHO, MGS4 is worth that price alone.

I know you said that in this thread, but in pretty much every PS3 multiplayer thread you seem to have problems with your connection with any/every game, and in warman's PS3 thread you complained about lag on PS3 multiplayer games in general.
