I've always heard the steel series were the best. But i found a fatality headset i really liked because i can pull out the mic and just use it as a headset. I'm on a $50 budget and i was hoping to get good advice from you guys. Which one is better? Are there any others you can offer?

Icemat Siberia Headphones, a lot of people here have them, including me.  FYI they are SteelSeries now I think but that 2nd headset is not them.  It is a clip-on mic so you can attach it or leave it off if you want.

Comfy, inexpensive, and comfy.  I got mine for $10 due to some weird rebates + $10 of Google Checkout lol.

So I guess 5.1 surround sound is unimportant to you guys?  I watch a lot of movies on my PC so that was a must-have for me.  I don't particularly like my Tritton AXPC headset but I would recommend you get a different brand 5.1 surround sound headset.

Fatal1ty also. Only problem I had was at first with CS, but I played with my audio settings and updated the drivers and that fixed the problem. Now all is loud and clear.

A word of warning to you, though: they do not isolate their own sound very well. They bother my girlfriend when she is in the same room because she can hear all the gunshots and everything.

I had their basic USB headset (now marketed as a Skype headset) and it was alright. Sound quality was iffy and they felt really cheap.

there aren't any true 5.1 headsets out there.  sure, you can count the special huge headphones with so and so many mini speakers built in and their fancy USB sound cards, but it's not going to be the same as a 5.1 speaker setup.  for instance, a 5.1 speaker setup needs 4 or 5 plugs, right?  have you seen any headphones out there that need 4 or 5 plugs?  no - they all use one 3.5mm plug, just like my icemat siberia headphones - which, by the way, DO have surround sound in game thanks to EAX and similar audio codecs/whatever they are.

Actually I have a pair of Speedlink Medusa Pro Gamers, they have really good 5.1 surround sound with the best bass I have ever heard on headphones. Quality wise they are incredibly comfy and even come in a little carry case.

For the record you NEED to have a 5.1 supporting sound card as it uses all the jacks. :- YES HAFFEY YOU ARE WRONG

Oh and the microphone is great quality too.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, they are so powerful they come with a power supply plug, I can now only have winamp at about 34% and windows at 50% volume, the headset iIlimit myself to 3/10 for front, rear and central, (so I don't blow my ears completely off) but I have the bass up to 10, just because I love bass.

wow i didn't know that.  i did research before i bought my headphones a couple years ago and it all said what i said.  maybe they were wrong or those came out after i searched.  sigh...i need to get with the times.  the cables must be a mess though...

Not really, its got extremely long cables to be honest so you can just tuck everything away behind the pc. The 5 jacks just go into the one cable and even then its not that much broader than a normal cable. The only thing that I will say isn't that great with these is that the volume control was made fairly cheaply, but even then it does the job nicely.

No they're not.

EDIT: And Haffey, my Tritton AX51's are true 5.1 They have 4 speakers in each ear, and have 3 plugs (front, rear, center/sub). The cables aren't that bad, it's all bundled in one cable until the end (plus it's ridiculously long, like 8 feet at least) and then it breaks off into the 3 speaker + mic + power (yes, my headset has a fucking amplifier in it).

Though really, after the feat wears off, 5.1 isn't really that great tbh. Not in a headset anyway.

My AX51's have broken on me. Probably my fault, but, either way, I'm stuck using a shitty Logitech USB headset atm. Sucks balls.

My next headset will be a pair of nice Sennheiser HD555's or HD280 Pros. I'll have to grab a cheapo desktop mic, but meh, I'll be able to hear everything.
