Minor Upgrade ... worth it or waste?

Though about upgrading a couple of parts ...

... worth it or waste? (meaning probably won't be too much gains, best to wait for full rebuild)

NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX

Depends on when you plan to rebuild. If it's within six months, wait it out. If it's "oh, I'll get to that one day" then buy these upgrades.

Spending over $500 on upgrades doesn't seem too minor (Then again, this is coming from someone who does $800~$900 semi-budget builds once every 3 years with zero to no upgrades)

At least with the video card you'll be able to use it on a fresh build, but spending a bunch on a new proc. doesn't seem like a good idea. Just wait until a fresh build for that, since you'll be able to get an awesome mobo, and then an even awesomer processor.

Besides, do you play a lot of new games or do loads of computing that would require those upgrades? I was almost wanting upgrade my video card from an HD 3850, but then I realized I wouldn't even be taking full advantage of it since the only game that I have that would benefit would be Crysis (and maybe FO3, but I haven't tried that yet)

I'd get an E8400 over the E8600, since it's just a clock speed difference. You can easily overclock the difference.

this, if you need the upgrade. if your computer seems fine as it is, just keep the cash for now. i7 systems will fall in price eventually.

Not worth it. That mobo will run a 45nm Wolfdale but won't overclock it, and you would gain lots of more performance by getting an aftermarket cooler and OC'ing your current CPU.

For the GPU, if you feel that the 8800GTX is not enough for you, then go for it. But I can't recon any other games than Crysis and GTA4 being limited by my 8800GT, so I think you won't gain too much by upgrading this time being. Wait till you have the need and money to get a Q9xxx or i7 build and get new CPU/Mobo/RAM/GPU then.
