I'm building a new PC for a friend who does a lot of video and image editing, and I was just looking at getting the Intel E8400 processor, Asus P5Q Mobo and ATI 4850 512mb graphics card...does this sound good enough for this type of work or should some other considerations be made? Or am I going into overkill?

That's fine for processor and video card, unless they really want to get into huge resolutions in which case get a 20"+ monitor and 1gb gfx card. But only if they want huge resolution processing and performance.

He wants a 24 inch moniter, so upgrade to the 1gb 4850? I also might swap the CPU for a quad core, but I'm trying to keep the price down, as he's a poor uni student

Yeah, AFAIK, the 4850 is more of a gaming card, designed to output somewhat-good looking gfx at realtime speed, while a workstation card is designed to produce stunning, perfect images at a slightly slower speed, but they process video and image renders much better.

I do my video/PS work on a crappy gaming card so can't give you suggestions there, but I believe nVidia refers to their line as Quadro cards.

Yeah if he wants to be doing video processing work at that sort of resolution the current video card wouldn't be ideal. As donkey says try for a workstation card and I'd recommend something that's 1gb.

indeed. A q9550 would be great and should OC nicely. Video cards don't really help, so you can go cheap there

Had a look at the Quadro cards, and they either seem very expensive or not that impressive...I wouldn't know personally, as I don't do any editing. The work he does isnt that high end-ish, but he does want decent speed. I think the 1gb 4850 will be ok for him, and I'll change the CPU to a Q8200 (for price reasons) unless you guys think that a workstation card is absolutely necessary. Keep in mind he still wants the normal other uses out of his PC, such as a few games and whatnot. I appreciate all the help that's come so far guys.

The Quadro's are for rendering really, they don't really have any place for video editing. And then the fact that they aren't worth the money even if you are rendering, 9800GX2's with CUDA are better for that tbh.

Ok, so the final build is P5Q Mobo, Q8200 CPU and 4850 1gb graphics cards. Any objections or further suggestions anyone has to add?

For video and image editing he could really benefit from CUDA. If the programs he plans working with are CUDA enabled, definitely get something from nVidia

Ok, graphics has been changed to nVidia 9600gt 1gb (again, cost). Will be ordering parts within a few days, so any problems you see please let me know soon. Again, thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated.

Get a 8800GTS 512 or a 9800GTX, or a GTX260 (which costs close to that of the 4850 1GB).

Though, do some research and see if the programs he will be using can take advantage of GPU's. What programs will be be using specifically? If what he is doing makes no use of the GPU, then it really doesn't matter what you buy.

You want as much video card memory and RAM as you can get. Processor helps, but memory is the key thing.

A Q8200? No! Go for the Q6600. It will run a little hotter but you get a better stock clock off the bat. And you have the benefit of a processor that's been around for a while and proven (you might get a G0 stepping too ). That thing can OC high.

I just found out that his Dad is paying and there's a massive budget so I kinda went spastic and got HD4870X2, Q9550 CPU, plus some other glowy bits and pieces...all sorted now. Thank you to everyone who contributed and could a mod please close this now? Cheers.

There isn't really any difference between "workstation" and "gaming" cards. It used to be, but it's mostly a gimmick now more.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Nothing really, it's a bit more energy efficient 8800GT.
