added a case to my post on page 1... it comes in under your 500 budget.
adjusted again to include psu comes to 498.

overclock the cpu to >3ghz and it is decent enough for that money
Don't get DS3L, it sucks.

Get a Gigaybte UD3R, Asus P5Q, or Biostar I45.

Surely he'll only play BF2 for the rest of his life? If yes, then no other upgrade is needed but a GPU to his current rig.
