Hi everyone. I would really appreciate some help finding some nice components for a new build.

I am not interested in the latest thing. I would LOVE to play GTA IV.  Not necessarily highest settings either.   I want to be brought up a few generations.  I can't even play the games I have had for a while on highest settings.

I basically want something that's reasonably priced.  Maybe that's not the right terminology. I want the components to be the ones that people bought before the latest thing that has dropped in price and compared to new, it's very reasonably priced. Something that has been shown to have very high customer satisfaction.  Something compatible, reliable, practical, but not showy.

So, here's my current setup:

CPU-Z CPU
CPU-Z Cache
CPU-Z Mainboard
CPU-Z Memory
CPU-Z SPD 1
CPU-Z SPD 2
CPU-Z About

300GB Western Digital IDE HDD
DVD ROM Drive
Viewsonic Ultrabrite E70f+ Monitor
Mainboard
Case
GPU

My computer is really loud.  If only it performed how it sounds.  I have a horrible Thermaltake CPU fan that is the root cause.  I want something quiet.

Here's what I have been thinking about:

HDD I'm not sure I should go larger. Only recently filled my 300GB. Definitely SATA, but not sure about Velociraptor. Seems like a lot of people on Newegg love them.

Monitor Wanting to go LCD.

Power Supply  Too much? Not enough?

Memory I was thinking of going from 2 to 4 GB.  Also, I've never heard of G.Skill until revisiting newegg for this project.  Any good?  My brother suggested Corsair XMS.

Mainboard  Read reviews, seemed good. Not a Rampage like I originally thought I should get...

CPU My brother has this CPU. Seems great, but he runs a lot of processes, and I don't.  I was wondering if I should simply make the jump to dual-core instead.

CPU Fan Cheap, and great reviews. Should I go another route?

The GPU I will be getting free from a friend, and that will be an 8800 something. Unless of course you come up with a better route?

The case I am not sure.  The Thermaltake Xaser is pretty damn bulky and I can't get to the console up top anyway because of my desk configuration.  Something in front might be better.

I would like a DVD Burner at least.

Thank you all.  Please ask question if you are uncertain about anything or need any more info.

Oh, and I am seriously considering getting an Xbox360 mainly for GTA IV.  Bring me back to the PC gaming realm!

For once a well organized post, with specs included.

What's your budget?

I think $1000 is reasonable.

A 500W Power Supply would be more than enough. Corsair is very well rated.

Corsair Dual Channel 2x2GB - The latency times might be a millisecond or two higher than the ones you posted but it's waaaaaaaaay cheaper and good quality. (I have 4 of the 1GB sticks and they're great)

Edited PSU

Thank you so much.  My brother has been the one to help me build my PC's over the years, but he has lost touch I believe.  He was suggesting at least 1000W because of the 8800 I might be getting.

I had that Corsair in my cart earlier this week and my bro said it seemed like "bottom of the barrel" and I should at least get XMS.

Looking at the reviews on the OCZ and Cooler Master Power Supplies, there's several that said they bought Corsair when the OCZ or CM ones crapped out on them. It's a bit more expensive but better quality.

You're probably going to want 4GB, Gskill is a cheaper brand, maybe go for Corsair Dominator, or OCZ Reaper for better performance. tbh

You want 4GB don't you? Go for 2x2GB not 2x1GB

And like Goonies said, go for the combo deal.

Would you suggest holding on to my current case then?  Yeah, looks real good. You guys brought the light to my dark journey browsing newegg.

Could we add on a DVD burner, case, and HDD? It's alright to go over the 1000, just not much more.

For the case, an Antec P182 would be good for silence

Graphics card-you will need 1Gb card in order to play GTA4 on higher settings. And you will need to OC that quad if you get it. 4870 1gb or x2
