Help Me Configure My Internet

ok here is the situation.

i have a 10MB internet connection with virgin media (cable). Now i bought a broadband router, which is just a WIRED ETHERNET HUB (wire connection) which allows you to connect multiple devices i.e. laptops, xbox etc. to the router and get a good solid wired connection via the Ethernet wire.

now i bought this hub so i can go on the internet on my Xbox 360 and surf the web on my computer at the same time.

now i know how to connect the wires etc. but i don't know how to configure my computer so it will work, my computer gets the connection but it does connect to the internet.(the 2 screens come in the bottom corner but no globe)

how do i configure my computer?????

BTW my O/S is vista HP 64-bit

As long as DHCP is enabled (which it should be by default) you can just plug and play

your setup looks like this?

modem with router --- switch -- PC1
-- PC2
-- XBOX

Are you sure that your connection goes

"land line to router" , "router to pc" and "router to xbox" ?

I know it's a silly question but it's usually something you might not have done correctly the first time.

Does the router light up with the signals, (there should be some indicator lights) if so which if any are on?

its not plug and play, i though it would be but when i open up firefox it it doesn't work and i cannot connect to xbox live.

my connection is like this,

router to modem(wan port) and then computer/xbox to the 1/2/3/4 ports on router via ethernet

is that how its supposed to be???

its got instructions and i have followed them but its for XP/win 2000, the guy that sold me this said the O/S doesn't matter

Ugh... I hate networking with Vista...

If you look on the bottom of the router, there should be an IP address (Mine is 192.168.0.1). Type that into your browser and log in. The sticker on the back may tell you the default user names etc. It's usually admin and password.

From here, check in the different pages that all settings seem ok, such as your Internet log in name and password (Email and password usually).

If you call your ISP then they can usually help fill in the blanks for you.

Then that's possibly all that's blocking you from using it. Just call them up and ask for the username and password to put in the Router settings in order for you to go online.

As FFLink says: Login to the router, and check the settings are correct...

(Ensure DHCP is setup on the Router, ensure connection type/ username/ password are correct for ISP settings)

its connects but doesn't connect to the internet, checked the lights on the router and it suggests it working fine, will ring my ISP up, what should i ask them?

Find out the IP address of the router, log into the web interface (the username and password for logging into the web interface are usually on the underside of the router), and configure it with the settings that you use to log into your broadband. Check the letters that your ISP sent you when you signed up, it could be on one of those.

It looks like your Xbox and PC are connected correctly to the router, just the router can't connect to the internet yet because you haven't given it the correct settings.

stupid virgin media workers, i asked for my password, some dumb Indian call worker then told me to reconnect my modem, i though she was going to tell my on how to retrieve it, the cow then says just use the internet like that, i was speechless

ok, i got the password off another call centre nut, but the password doesn't work, the guy goes to contact the router manufacturers. O well, its from maplins and will go back then.

can some recommend me a good cheap, plug and go wired cable router with at least 4 Ethernet ports???

No router is going to be "plug and play" as far as WAN goes if your connection requires authentication and you don't have your username and password.

But wouldn't it be his modem that needs to authenticate? If the modem already connects, then it's not an authentication problem.

The way I understood it, used used to be

Internet -> Modem -> PC

and its now...

Internet -> Router with Modem -> Internal Network
