My power supply is making weird noises and I just decided that I'm going to buy a new one and hopefully solve the problem. The one I have now I bought like a year or 2 ago and I don't remember if the power supply has to be a certain type. I'm looking for a 500W one because that seems to work good for me. Do I need a certain type of PSU or what?

Generic 350W should work fine
So 500 isn't even needed. Should I get a 400W?Stimey wrote:

Yeah but then he would post another thread in a year-"Halp my PC doesn't wanna turn on!"Stimey wrote:

A Basiq 350 should do more than well.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
Can you get them any cheaper? Like around 40 bucks?.Sup wrote:

For some reason, I thought Dell's had proprietary PSU's...... right?Whiplash wrote:

I'd recommend an antec basiq or earthwatts
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
The PSU I have now isn't the one that came with the Dell. I replaced that one like a year or 2 ago.
Some Dell cases require the PSU be mounted upside down lol and i had to cut away some of the back of the case to.... it wouldnt work any other way lol.TopHat01 wrote:

EDIT: This is the PSU i used... but my system was alot more demanding on power... this PSU works excellently in my secondary rig.

That antec basiq, or if you want to use your PSU in your next rig too, this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6817341012

Are you guys sure that 350W is enough? I don't want to get errors or anything.
List everything in your PC - hdd(s), fans, CD/DVD/Blueray, CPU, GPU, EVERYTHING (and ideally exactly which model P4 it is)Whiplash wrote:

OR go here, input all that info, hit calculate, and add at least 50%.

I am running a similar-to-his computer (6800GT/Celeron 2.5GHz/2xIDE HDD/5xPCI card) off a 250W ToPower PSU. That 350W Basiq will work _just_ fine.
And lol, that antec PSU calc is telling me I would need 440W It's also telling me 570W for my 1st system I run off a 500W chieftec.

A good quality PSU will cope with a system that requires more power than the PSU is rated at, but not for very long (like a couple of years, if you're lucky).
Of course, if you upgrade often, then it's not a problem.
It's telling me I need 340W @ 100% load, which isn't too off.
Those things are never accurate though.

You people need to learn the difference between Watts and rated Watts. A modern gaming computer barely uses 300W. And I'm talking 8800GT-and-dual-core here.
For instance, that PSU calculator recommends me an about 600W PSU. I have a HX520 that doesn't even get warm, and I can run my entire computer, under full load, including a 24" screen, off of a 260W UPS. Considering quality PSUs like Corsair and Antec often are even a bit underrated (You can suck closer to 700W out of a HX520 and 450W from a 380W Basiq), a 350W is a very solid choice for a computer like that, which probably shipped with a generic Dell 300 or 400W PSU. Trust me.
