Loads of online retailers are showing the Hitachi Deskstar range as 'discontinued'.

RIP my old friends.

Anyhoo...

Anyone know if they're replacing them with anything?

And if so, what?

If its under warranty they will replace it with something else, usually better.

Thank god.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

They were wank. There's a reason why they earned the nickname 'Deathstar'.

WD/Seagate/Samsung > Hitachi

Funny, I've used 'em for ages and have never had a single one die. (probably in the order of a dozen or so drives)

WD or Samsung. Hitachis tend to die and Seagates tend to have shady warranty.

Deskstars are pretty good drives.  I have a 80gb Deskstar but it runs hot.  Been running for 2+ years.

Why would you say they are good drives? Any specific reason or is it just that it hasn't failed on you yet?

It hasn't failed me.  I also have a Travelstar in my laptop.  I dropped my laptop a couple of times while it was transferring files and it was still running.  No hiccups.

My Deskstar has been through BSODs, no corrupt files.  I don't know if there is a correlation between BSOD caused by memory and hard drive failure but my Deskstar held up fine.

My Deskstar hasn't failed on me yet either but I don't use it. Its loud and overheats a lot.

At one point they removed all warranty from all their OEM HD's. THat's when I stopped trusting them.

Are you missing my point or me yours?

My point being that the Deskstar range, as whole, appears to have been discontinued and not that one, or more, or any, Deskstar(s) has/have died and I want to replace it/them.

good thing it wasn't a couple years ago.  both of my seagates were OEM.  one of them died but i RMA'ed it nice and quick - and it told me it was going to die before it did.  (actually it never died, but i RMA'ed it anyway)

I think they now have 5yr warranty again (public demand lol?), but I totally won't trust a company that has once decided to drop their warranties.
