Tweak Virtual memory for performance

Has anyone ever done this? I just did, and created one on my extra HDD, it boosted performance like a mofo... especially because I would have to wait a minute or two before my computer would actually become usable... Now its ready to go in 10 seconds

Heres what you do

Vista: Go to Control Panel > Open System > On the left side click "Advanced System Settings" > Under Performance on the Advanced tab, click Settings > Click the Advanced tab once again, under virtual memory click Change >
Click custom size, and change it to 2x the RAM you have, if you have an extra drive, change that one also, to 2x your RAM.

Restart

XP: Go to Control Panel > click Advanced > Click Performance tab then click Settings > Then click advanced > Then in the Virtual memory area click change >
Click custom size, and change it to 2x the RAM you have, if you have an extra drive, change that one also, to 2x your RAM. MAKE SURE TO CLICK SET

I dunno i did the opposite when getting more ram, a 12 GB swap file is counter productive imo. I only made a 1024MB file for 6GB of ram. When it was 9GB there way to much disk activity and noticeable performance degradation.

Another part of that is make sure you use a defragger that puts it all together and moves it to the outside.

I turn mine off completely and its alot faster now. never been over 2gb of ram usage according to coretemp, got 4gb of ram so i just turn the pagefile off completely

Yup, mostly depends on what you use your PC for, as well as what hardware you have.

You want to try to use as little swapfile as possible, so setting it to stupid values like 2x your RAM isn't beneficial at all. Unless of course, you use that much memory, in which case you should just buy more memory. If you have to use the swapfile, you are significantly slowing things down.
