http://www.tech-forums.net/pc/f10/4870- … le-193397/Both cards 512mb!
So I got a 4870 today....threw it under water and clocked it to 860/1000 before doing some benches.
I will keep this very short and to the point...as you can see, the 4870 is about 8% faster overall at the same clocks...possibly 9% if you clock the memory even higher to 1100 (4400). The biggest difference looks to be the maximum fps of Crysis with 4xAA. The 4870 also seems strong at 3dmark06 in comparison to the 4850 if you look at the individual sm2/sm3 scores...this shows that there's some power on tap here from the extra memory bandwidth...
Also keep in mind that the 4850 512mb was pencil modded and needed 1.37V for 860mhz...the 4870 did it on stock voltage which was measured with a DMM to be 1.277V under load. Both cards are under water and I will be vmodding the 4870 to see if I can get some more out of it
I will leave you all to draw your own conclusions as to the extra price of the 4870 over the 4850...hopefully this will spark some interesting discussion
Notes:
1. Settings in games are all maxed out (ultra, enthusiast..etc).
2. Resolution is 1680x1050 except 3dmark06 is the default 1280x1024
System test setup is:
* Server 2008 64bit
* E8500 @ 4607mhz
* 4x1gb OCZ SLI @ 1164mhz 5,5,5,15
* P5Q Deluxe
* Catalyst 8.12 BETA drivers, installed without CCC so default driver settings (balanced AFAIK)
glad i went for the 50 tbh

Not a surprise to be honest. The only difference between a 4850 and a 4870 at same clocks is that the 4870 has GDDR5 instead or GDDR3. And you can't OC a 4850 to those clocks on air / without serious knowledge.
Besides the 4780 is only about 50e more expensive than 4850 as of the latest price drops.

The point was to compare the cards clock for clock. Obviously the 4870 is superior in the fact that it can clock a bit higher.Dauntless wrote:

I thought you did all that, lol. Happy I went with the 4870 1GB. Very happy. Very.

<3 4850
Over 100 dollars less here (yes, that's a lot for us) and still runs crysis warhead on Gamer (I use XP) with over 30 fps. That's a huge improvement with 16 fps with my 7600 GS.

Now I just need some monies to buy a video card cooler so I can OC a bit.
I shoulda bought the HIS with the ICEQ4
I must change my opinion about which card I would get now for price range of 300.
XFX GTX 260/216 Black Edition is in some cases even faster than stock GTX 280. It looks awsome, is silent, is fast, has awsome warranty/support and is bundled with Far Cry 2.

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
Max... you u made me join dark side again! Your pic of a 9800GX2 made me see the GTX 260/280 cards in whole different light.max wrote:

(for some reason I started to really like the tank-like cards lol.)
other reason for my sudden interest in the green team is that their cards just seems to run the newest games better than ATi ones.
Now that I don't have to use nforce chipsets for SLi anymore (that was the doom of my 8800GTX SLi rig) I might as well go NV this time.
